Nvidia 550Ti Sleep / Wake / Freeze Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
After i had done a fresh clean install ... nothing changed. Install was only with PCIRootUID=0 possible; everythings installs fine - QE/CL work, but thinks like waking up after sleep => black screen....

Imacs also seem to have this problem

While browsing Apple support discussions I've noticed that iMacs with Lion and some with Mountain Lion are also experiencing problems when waking from sleep.
Could this problem just be a bug in the OS?

Can anyone confirm that this is not a problem with the 560ti? I just bought all my parts for a new build and havn't opened the 550ti. I was thinking of just returning it for the 560 if that solves the problem.

Just another data point here.

I'm running ML on a Dell XPS L701X Laptop, which sports an NVidia 445M mobile graphics card. I've never been able to sleep without killing the USB 3.0 ports, so sleep is not the issue for me. However, I'm experiencing multiple graphic lockups every day, and I believe the problem is caused when the display blanks (sleeps). Here's the error from my system log:

8/3/12 11:06:38.000 PM kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!

The screen freezes at this point and I must power down the computer and re-start. Lion ran from day one and never had any problem with lockups. At this point, I'm on my last attempt at a workaround before restoring Lion. I've disabled display sleep and I'm waiting to see if that will avoid the lockup. If so, I can suck up the extra energy usage and wear/tear on the video while waiting for a software fix. Since it's a laptop, obviously I'm stuck with the Fermi card.

UPDATE: I've set the display to never sleep and instead turned on a screen saver. No freezes! Yes, it's not perfect, but it works for now and will keep me using ML until a solution can be found.

It's at least good to hear that there are better brains than mine working on the problem. I was beginning to think that I was the only one having difficulties w/ML! Thanks for all the effort at finding a fix.

I will add to the chorus here. I have a GT430 that worked 100% in Lion. Clean install of ML results in a blue screen if I power off my monitor and turn it back on. There is a real issue here that is pervasive across the Fermi cards.

Exactly my experience with the same card, FWIW. I have to use the reset button to get back to ML's desktop. I also have to push reset after booting (restart works fine) because I get stuck with a white screen.

I noticed that I did not configure AGPM correctly, so AGPM does not load for my card when boot. Now I edited AGPM, adding my card id and some values under MacPro5.1 (the smbios I'm using right now), and AGPM loads correctly and I can see various state changes in Console. But the problem still exists...
I'm thinking that the only solution would be maybe a Chimera/Chameleon update, or a OS X update.

I like to contribute my experiences.

I have a HP Elitebook 8560W equiped with Quadro 1000M which sits between Geforce GT540M - GT550M and is Fermi Based
It's driving the internal 1080p display but also a Dell U2711 using display-port.

Symptoms:

Power Off Dell Us2711 displays Blue Screen on Laptop screen,
Power On Dell doesnt change anything, reboot needed by manual shut-off,
Resolution Change on internal 1080p or U2711 screen cause blue screen,
System.Log -> localhost kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x1f = Fifo: MMU Error,
Sometimes Screen gets scrambled / artefacts / but password field slightly visable selecting the
password box displays blinking cursor, typing password causes heavy disk access but nothing happens.
Screen resolution changes on both screens cause blue screen and reboot needed after.

Tried Chameleon 2035 | Chimera Latest version no difference,
Tried MBP 8,2 - iMac 12,2 " AGPM with correct DevID's (power management is working good Cinebench | Luxmark results,
Tried several pmset hibernatemodes (0 - 3 - 25) no difference,
Still no success... but our "buy a real mac causes never problems friends" seems to be have the same issues reading the apple support forums.

I'll strongly I'll get the feeling that our multi multi billion awwarded company had spread the wrong labour resources in the Mountain Lion project. It's easy to shout every time that OSX is the best OS but ill think even Steve would shout "Its S-H-I-T you made"

Thank you for sharing your experience. Your systems have the same channel exception error as mine and as many others. Also, I noticed that I did not comment something that you did: when the system gets blue screen or it hangs exiting (or entering) fullscreen, I see that this error causes heavy disk access.
Also, if I did not restart the system, after some minutes (like 3 mins) in wich heavy disk access occurs, the blue screen gone and I can see the desktop again and move the cursor, but the system is hanged, the hour does not change and I can't click anything.
It's another experience that I'm sure everyone using fermi based cards on ML have but no one till now comments about it.
