this might sound daft but how do you boot with -x using chameleon? it says to press any key but i don't think my keyboard is working at that stage and so it just tries to boot normally.

try burning iboot-suppoerted to a different disk i had problems with using a cd-rw but it worked fine fron a cd-r. Also have you changed the setting in your BIOS to boot form cd first and changed the sata settings to ACHI?

I was having this issue but burned a new iboot-supported disk on a cd-r instead of cd-rw and have now installed SL and is working just need to fix my networking and work out why the audio breaks after installing the vanilla kernal in multibeast.

Re: 4GB RAM detected, only 2GB available? Have you had any other OS's on this machine? and how much RAM was being reported. If you haven't tried any other OS download a live linux distro and see what that says. also as mentioned above check the RAM is installed in the correct slots.

I use a nvidia 6600gt with osx 10.4 with no problems though my card is AGP and not pci.

Hi have you had any luck with installing and running SL yet? I should have an inspiron 580 soon so will give it a go as it sounds like it will be possible to get this working.
