[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Casey, thank you once again for the detailed response! I've attached my Sleep-log-1.txt file, and have also detached the Front USB 2.0 header from the Motherboard (but I've left the USB 3.0 front panel connection in as you've instructed)

Can you please take a look at my sleep log file and let me know which options from the above I should implement? I just don't want to second guess something before you've seen it, so would appreciate what of the above I should do. I don't mind doing all of the above. To point out again, the Hack was asleep from 12th April 2020 at 22:45 to around 13:00 on 13th April 2020 (which is when I woke it), so anything happening in-between those times I'm guessing will help narrow down what the culprit is?

Lastly, as I'll need some of the USB 3 ports in the future to connect various peripherals (like audio devices, external drives etc), am I ok to plug back in my Apple USB keyboard and Logitech G302 mouse in the USB 2 ports, or should I hold off for now once we get everything working?
The sleep log looks quite normal. There were about 4 or 5 maintenance wake (Dark Wake) cycles for housekeeping activities like checking for notifications and syncing address book, etc. The sleep log is not easy to decipher, but this type of maintenance wake happens on my system as well.

If this bothers you for some reason (it really shouldn't unless the computer also wakes you :)) then try all of the suggestions in bullets 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Each time I create a config.plist I add more info to the name so I can reference it later. I swapped names on two of them. Thanks for helping out CaseySJ. Randomly, its happened 3 times now, the keyboard and mouse just stop working. I do not get a disconnect on the screen. Happens when physically plugged in and when on bluetooth. I power cycle and things work normally again. Any ideas?

Your signature says that you're using a Radeon VII. Your symptoms sound like a Radeon VII / WEG problem. Try disabling/removing WEG.

Thanks Casey. I'll leave it as it is for now, as if you're having a similar situation, then it's fine. Apologies, a few more quick questions:

  • As you mentioned you also have DarkWake cycles for things like address book sync etc, as these are dark wake, does your PC actually wake up and do this at night whilst you're asleep? The only reason I ask is because if it does, then I'm more than happy to continue life with the Hack as it currently stands, as if you get similar behaviour then I know I'm on the right path. Or is there a quieter way it can do this without fully waking up (sorry that sounds like a really noobish question)
  • Does Dark Wake necessitate the computer actually waking up? Or is there a way the computer can do this without waking up fully, I.E just the PC turning on without monitors also turning on?
  • As per the first log I posted (attached below with highlighted wake reasons), as these were 'RTC alarm' and 'XDCI' wake reasons, as I've now removed the Apple 'set time and date automatically' setting, as well as removing the Front USB 2.0 case cable to the Motherboard USB 2.0 header, should these reasons no longer pop-up?
  • As I'll need some of the rear USB 3 ports in the future to connect various peripherals (like audio devices, external drives etc), am I ok to plug back in my Apple USB keyboard and Logitech G302 mouse in the USB 2 ports at the back? As in, are these USB 2 ports ok to be used? Or should I hold off for now to see how Sleep remains over the next few days and then plug them back in?
  • Once I install the Fenvi card, will there be a way to get the Front USB 2.0 port working again? It comes in handy, but if it comes at the detriment of not having a stable machine, then I don't mind it not working, so please be as brutally honest as you can/want!
  • Lastly, as I'm in the UK, can you pls double check this Fenvi T919 card is ok. Are you also using the T919 as I don't mind going for any of the options in your guide, but I'd prefer using what you have to make life easier https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07VCCZS54/?tag=tonymacx86-21). I've also found this Fenvi T919 card that claims to be Bluetooth 5.0 and the new AX standard for Wi-Fi. As it's the same price, should I go for this as I'll be future proofing myself - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223943534697)

I've saved your post above with the bullet points in my own personal iCloud note on the installation steps I've already done (like disabling all the energy saver preferences, unchecking the Apple 'set time and date automatically' setting), so if problems still persist, I'll come back and apply those steps, but would it be ok if I keep an eye on the logs for a few days and post back? I won't install any software yet as I want to get this all sorted, then make a bootable backup as a baseline, and then be on my merry way with software, personalised settings etc

Thank you once again!

If you had a bootable backup, it could have been very helpful right now. A reminder to everyone: Make a bootable backup now while your system is functioning properly.

Some folks reported stable behavior after changing the following entry in BIOS: IOAPIC 24-119. They flipped the setting to Disabled, booted into macOS, and later changed it back to Enabled. You may want to try this as well.

We can also continue with the process of elimination:
  • Have you already tried disconnecting EVERY USB device (both internal and external) except for USB keyboard and USB mouse? USB keyboard and USB mouse must be connected to one of the USB ports on the rear IO panel, not to the computer case.
  • Have you disconnected all Thunderbolt devices?
  • Have you disabled Bluetooth? It's okay to keep WiFi enabled.
  • Have you disconnected all SATA and NVMe drives except the macOS SSD?
  • Have you removed all PCIe cards except WiFi/BT card? This also means removing the AMD Vega 64 and connecting the computer via USB-C to DisplayPort cable or HDMI-to-HDMI cable using the ports on the rear IO panel, and setting Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007 as described here.
When all else fails, we need to reinstall MacOS from scratch on a spare SSD to create a new baseline. If the system still freezes randomly, then we know that macOS on the primary SSD is not corrupted, so we can focus our attention on hardware components.

Another option is to install Windows or Linux on the same machine on their own separate SSD and see if the computer freezes there as well.
I was reseating all the hardware piece by piece... When I got to the last one (cpu) I found a problem with the cpu cooler... After reseating it, the first two times I started the pc, the cpu cooler would not spin (the pc would boot normaly but I turned it down to not overheat the cpu) so i tried to disconnect and reconect the cpu cooler from the mobo again and it started spinning again, but I think the cooler is failling and when it does, the systems shuts down (both macOS and Windows have the same behavior)
Coincidentally I have bought a new Hydro Cooler this weekend and it's suposed to arrive today or tomorrow... I'll wait and replace with the new one and see if it solves the problem, if it doesn't than I'll follow these new steps! Thanks man, I'll update you with any news!

  • You may try this approach to update Clover.
  • However, I've found that latest Clover isn't necessarily the cure. I had more luck after clearing NVRAM by pressing F11 at Clover Boot Menu.
I am updating from 4003 (I know, a little outdated) and Clover Configurator tells me "CLOVERX64.efi not found!", which is weird because my EFI partition has a CLOVERX64.efi file in /Volumes/EFI/EFI/CLOVER.
The approach you suggested is for updating from 5xxx to 5xxx, which is not my case.
Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Hi @CaseySJ !

Once again thanks for the excellent guide!

I upgraded from Mojave to Catalina today... it took a while and a few attempts (thankfully I had a working backup that I could fall back to!) but I got it up and running now, at least mostly.

Few things I could use some help on:

- Can't get a signal via DisplayPort on the Vega64 to my Monitor. BIOS, Clover and Boot work fine over DP but then I have to switch over to HDMI (also on the Vega64) to get any output on the display. I updated Whatevergreen (again) but no luck.
- No audio except for via Bluetooth to Airpods or via HDMI. Headphonejacks etc are not detected. I think I installed AppleALC correctly (I copied it over from the Catalina-Upgrade-ZIP from the Miniguide). I also don't see any audio devices in the system profiles, except the HMDI audio.

Im attaching my zipped EFI-Folder if that helps.

BR
Marc

Your system's display did turn on, but the system woke up only 2 times between 12-Apr 22:45:00 and 13-Apr 13:02:00 due to maintenance activities:

2020-04-12 22:46:15 +0100 Wake Wake from Normal Sleep [CDNVA] : due to XDCI/HID Activity Using AC (Charge:0%) 493 secs
2020-04-13 04:24:17 +0100 Wake Wake from Normal Sleep [CDNVA] : due to RTC/Alarm Using AC (Charge:0%)
2020-04-13 07:32:38 +0100 Wake Wake from Normal Sleep [CDNVA] : due to RTC/Alarm Using AC (Charge:0%) 3675 secs

2020-04-13 13:02:33 +0100 Wake Wake from Normal Sleep [CDNVA] : due to XDCI/UserActivity Assertion Using AC (Charge:0%) 653 secs

Notice that the second item in red lasted over 3600 seconds (> 1 hour). Why? Look what it was doing during that time. Notice also that it turned off the display after a couple of seconds, and then began to do its work:

  • As per the first log I posted (attached below with highlighted wake reasons), as these were 'RTC alarm' and 'XDCI' wake reasons, as I've now removed the Apple 'set time and date automatically' setting, as well as removing the Front USB 2.0 case cable to the Motherboard USB 2.0 header, should these reasons no longer pop-up?
I don't really see anything wrong.
  • As I'll need some of the rear USB 3 ports in the future to connect various peripherals (like audio devices, external drives etc), am I ok to plug back in my Apple USB keyboard and Logitech G302 mouse in the USB 2 ports at the back? The USB 2 ports on the back are fine. I was only suggesting to disconnect the front panel USB port, but after looking at the sleep log, even that is not necessary. Your computer's sleep/wake behavior looks normal.
  • Once I install the Fenvi card, will there be a way to get the Front USB 2.0 port working again? It comes in handy, but if it comes at the detriment of not having a stable machine, then I don't mind it not working, so please be as brutally honest as you can/want!
When the Fenvi arrives, it will be necessary to use a USB 1-to-2 port splitter (see Components section at the top of Post #1 for links). After both the Fenvi and front panel USB cables are connected to the splitter, simply run IORegistryExplorer, scroll down to XHC, and post a screenshot of HS11 and HS12. I can modify the USB SSDT for you at that time.
Yes that's the right card.
If you're having similar sleep logs to me without any of the above bullet point 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 being applied, then I'll leave them as is.

I won't install any software yet as I want to get this all sorted, then make a bootable backup as a baseline, and then be on my merry way with software, personalised settings etc

Thank you once again!
At this point, based on the logs I've seen:
  • Your machine is behaving normally. I don't see any sleep/wake problem. Display comes on, but goes off within seconds. Background tasks run silently as they're designed to.
  • Disabling Power Nap or setting Dark Wake to 0 or changing any of the pmset arguments is actually not advised. In other words, we wouldn't take medicine for an ailment we do not have. If the computer is asymptomatic, then we can simply move on.

Very good. Good thermal paste can make a huge difference. I often remove the standard pre-applied paste and use Arctic Silver MX-4 or Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut.

Sure, please follow only bullets 6 through 16 of this guide:
This will create a brand new USB flash disk with a brand new EFI/CLOVER folder. At Step 16 we boot Mojave using the new USB disk. If the boot succeeds and you can confirm that the same serial number appears in About this Mac, then we can copy the EFI folder from the USB disk to the EFI partition of the macOS SSD (but be sure to back up the existing EFI folder on the macOS SSD).

Looks like the display turned on each time, but was turned off again within seconds.

I don't really see anything wrong.

The USB 2 ports on the back are fine. I was only suggesting to disconnect the front panel USB port, but after looking at the sleep log, even that is not necessary. Your computer's sleep/wake behavior looks normal.

Casey, hats off to you. Thank you for taking the time to dissect the logs!

I'm actually blown away, because going through the logs as you've carefully highlighted, this machine was (I think) sorting out my iCloud Photo Library and upon checking the Photos app, it has my entire 30GB photo library sorted and dusted! It's also analysed all the faces in my photos etc just like I've set it on my iPhone. This tallies up to the the parts you've highlighted in purple with 'PhotoAnalysis', 'MediaAnalysis' etc, so it appears it woke up to do some tasks, but as you've pointed out, the display turns off. I've got a feeling my original Hackintosh did this (but never perfectly, which is why I disabled iCloud photos according to some notes I made), so the fact that this has successfully got my whole photo library analysed has simply blown me away! I've just taken a photo on my iPhone and bang, it's there on my photos app on my Mac! I thought I was going to have to wait for the Fenvi to arrive for that feature to work, let alone all the faces etc being analysed!

I'll keep an eye out on sleep behaviour as all of the analysis/addrress book sync has been completed, whilst also running logs for the next few days which is how long the Fenvi and 1TB SSD will take to arrive. I'll also post a screenshot of XHC for you to modify the SSDT (thank you!) to get the front USB 2.0 port also working concurrently.

Lastly, thanks for confirming everything else is fine, I won't disable any of the energy saver preferences, nor change any of the PMSET arguments as you suggested previously (can't wait to try and unlock my Mac with my apple watch when the Fenvi card/splitter arrives!), have left the USB 2 header connected until the Fenvi card arrives and have moved the USB keyboard and Mouse back to the USB 2 ports.
