Solving NVIDIA Driver Install & Loading Problems

Hi guys, I've got a bit of a strange GPU issue I really hope you can help me with!

Here's my Hackintosh specs:

OS X Yosemite 10.10.5
Mac Pro 3,1
Gigabyte Z97 D3H
16Gb Ram
Intel Core i7 4790K
GeForce GTX 750Ti >>> upgraded to >>> MSI GeForce GTX 970
(Two monitor setup)

My Hackintosh has been running with very few problems (for video production) for about 6 months, and recently I decided to upgrade the GPU for better CUDA performance and to dabble in some gaming on a separate Windows install.

I swapped out my old GTX 750Ti and put in a new MSI GTX 970. The new card seemed to work perfectly straight away, so I ran some benchmark tests using Valley and Cinebench - both of which gave me great results.

The strange problem I have is that whenever I quit out of either of the benchmark software, both of my screens immediately go blank (DVI = black / HDMI = grey), and the computer seems to freeze. Only a hard reset fixes this. Its strange because I can run the tests for as long as I like without problems, but as soon as I quit the application - freeze.

My question is: do you think this is a Hackintosh / Driver related issue, or possibly something more sinister wrong with the card itself? (I’ve not yet managed to test the 970 with a Windows install yet.)

Many thanks for your help!

Michael.

Update to this:

I'm running NVIDIA web driver version: 346.02.03f01, and CUDA driver version: 7.5.22

According to the driver manager the NVIDIA driver is up to date - but I notice on the website that its not the latest version. Could this be because I'm running Yosemite (not El Cap), or maybe because my profile is Mac Pro 3,1 - would this restrict the driver updates?

Thanks,

MBG.

Since the drivers are specific to the OS X build number you are running you will not be presented with available updates if there aren't any for the current build you are running, usually there is one per build. Check the first post of this thread for all of the drivers listed by OS X build number.

Thanks for the reply Slim. Any thoughts on my earlier post above (#604)? As my drivers are up to date for the build I have (apparently), I'm at a bit of a loss for troubleshooting this now...

Best regards,

MBG.

I am not really sure. I don't run benchmarking programs very often and I am not running Yosemite on any of my machines anymore so I can't really test those drivers. If the card functions fine when doing anything other than benchmarking then I would worry to much about it.

So I'm having a popular issue it seems. Black screen and no input half way through boot. I should say this issue comes and goes usually. Usually I uninstall the driver and reinstall and it works for a while, but this instance has persisted for several weeks now and it's driving me crazy.

I'm using smbios iMac 11.3 because I have a lynnfield i5. I've tried other smbios like 14.2 which was recommended and that didn't fix it either. My gpu is a EVGA gtx 970 and I'm running 10.11.5. I've tried all the solutions I could think of or find, including the ones in the thread but nothing is working. Any suggestions? Thanks!

It has been a while since i needed help guys. My Z77-DS3H i5 and EVGA GT 740 runs perfectly on El Capitan except that the Graphics is only 1280x800 on a 30inch 2k screen and is driving me nuts.

For some reason it panicked and went into a restart loop for a min and ten went away. on restart i got this report.

I wanted to bump this question. I'm in a similiar situation with my system. The only way for my system to load is to add the bootArgu nv_disable=1 to clover options everytimes i restart. I could see the Nvidia web driver installed but when i reload and change the bootArgu to nvda_drv=1, it still doesn't work. A

Also, If a change is to made, how do i input it? Im not sure if it's done via terminal or thru a downloaded program. (I am fairly new to this)

I would love some guidance on this. I have the clover configurator installed on the el capitan. I also have the NVIDIA web driver for 346.03.06f01 installed. I can't seem to get my system to restart even with the nvda_drv=1 enabled and nv_disable=1 disabled.

Slim Jim and any other knowledgable contributors, can you assist me on this question?

El Capitan 10.11.4 with Clover is working for me:

To stop Photoshop CC from crashing:
Un-tick OpenCL render. In PS, go to Preferences/Performance. Click "Advanced" on the right. Un-select OpenCL.
