I've been having problems with hard drives disappearing when either plugged into the back usb 3 ports or via the usb 2 ports in the front since upgrading to Mojave. It was stable under Sierra (using trs' guide). I woke up this morning and my computer had restarted saying it shut down due to a problem. Any ideas?

Hi Secretmak,
I'm not at all qualified to dig deeply into your debug, and I don't think you give enough
problem reporting to really track this down. So i can only give very limited help, and I am
certainly not an expert on the many postings concerning USB configuration in Mojave.
You say that you upgraded to Mojave from Sierra (or High Sierra) set up using Trs96's guide.
The approach to USB configuration here is very different from that guide. Sniki recommends
following Rehabman's hotpatch recipe, provides his SSDT-USB.dsl to define the various USB
ports and hubs incorporated in the SSDT.aml APIC patch, and recommends installing Rehabman's
USBInjectAll.kext.
I think Trs96's guide merely recommends installing "7/8/9 Series USB Support" as provided in
Multibeast 11.0.1-1. As noted there, it installs FakePCIID.kext and FakePCIID_XCHImux.kext.
Trs96 warns against mixing the methods of the two guides, and you may want to recheck which
USB kexts you have installed in S/L/E, L/E, and clover/kexts/other. Rehabman has some discussion
of FakePCIIID.kext here:
Overview One of the serious issues most users will face with 10.11.x (and later, including 10.12.x) is the new USB stack in OS X/macOS. It has a much heavier reliance on ACPI, and as a result is much more likely to expose bugs in your ACPI implementation of _PLD, and _UPC. It is covered in...
www.tonymacx86.com
In addition, your panic mentions the process pmset, which controls power management settings
and things like sleep, hibernation, and standby mode. You can see your settings in Terminal by
typing "pmset -g".
Sniki and Rehabman make some recommendations about defeating hibernation with pmset adjustments
and /var/vm/sleepimage. See Step 4 in post #1. I don't see similar recommendations in Trs96's guide,
but he is the expert on his guides and there are a couple online here. You may want to check your BIOS
under Power - Hardware Power Management and disable S5 Maximum Power Savings. Under the Clover/Boot
menu in your config.plist you might want NeverHibernate = Yes. I think both guides recommend renaming
EHCx to EHOx in ACPI patches. In System Preferences, you might want to defeat Wake for Ethernet Network
Access. In iCloud, you may want to defeat Find My Mac.
I'm not sure that I can be of much help beyond that. I have noticed that there are several new patches for
port limits with different versions of Mojave, and I'm not sure what applies to the 8300. I have noticed
with my machine and one of my backup USB3 drives that I have difficulty completing a large backup
on the USB 3 port but it finishes ok on the USB 2 port. I have verified that all my external ports are working
as expected for USB2 and USB3 using Sniki's methods, and am not sure of the source of the backup problem.
It does not cause kernel panics.
I also noticed that you seem to be using internal USB ports that I haven't used. I notice that Sniki defines
more than 15 ports and you might want to consider port limit patches.
Good luck,
Lisa
