[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hey everyone. Has anyone updated/installed as new Big Sur?
Hello @hamzab,

Are you referring to an (a) in-place update from Big Sur 11.2 to 11.3 or (b) brand new installation of Big Sur or (c) upgrading from Catalina to Big Sur?

Item (a) can be done through System Preferences --> Software Update when 11.3 is released.

Items (b) and (c) contain mini-guides that can be referenced from the Quick Reference spoiler at the top of Post 1.

Hi,
I tried updating my Efi to a newer OpenCore but somehow messed up things. It's still running just not as good as before. Can anyone share their settings for Opencore 0.6.6 or newer? Thanks

Please try the new method described here:

Hi Folks,

So I'm having a terrible time with USB freezes. Having bought myself a pluggable USB 2.0 10-port hub and followed the Best practices for USB 2.0 devices I'm still getting regular USB freezes.

1. Freezes only ever occur when using an SSL UF8 Control surface and logic pro X 10.6.1.
2. I don't have any USB 3 devices at all. Only usb devices plugged into HS09 and/or HS10.
3. I only have the SSL UF8, apple wired keyboard, Dell wired mouse and Apollo X16 Thunderbolt interface connected when the freezes occur.
4. I have removed the Fenvi card for now to eliminate possibilities. Still getting freezes.
5. Freezes seem more likely on large Logic projects with high CPU usage - although I'm not certain as freezes are seemingly random.
6. Nothing in the system log.
7. Have tried using the posted SSDT to limit ports to HS09, HS10 (USB 2) HS11 (internal), SS07 (USB3), SSP1 and SSP2.
8. Since using the Pluggable hub I've noticed that the SSL UF8 disconnects and reconnects by itself sometimes.
9. The SSL UF8 is listed as a USB 2.0 hub with two devices SSL Control I/F and HID Controller which both run up to 12Mbps.

I'm using clover, not Open Core as I can't get my RX550 working on OC - Separate issue and have had limited time to try things (just need to figure out how to inject fakeID 0x67FF1002 and ATI in OC).

I used to get the freezes with my ICON Icon Pro X, with exactly the same conditions (i.e. using logic pro). Both device use the MCU protocol to communicate with logic pro.

Anyone any ideas what to try next? It's vital I get this working!
Some questions:
  • Are you using the USB-C <--> USB-A cable that comes in the box with the SSL UF8?
  • The USB-C end of the cable must of course be connected to the port labeled USB on the UF8.
  • Which version of macOS are you running?
  • When did the USB instability problem start to occur?
  • What changes were made to the system at around that time?

Looks interesting. Install two and have up to 8 4K displays. Would require some testing first.
A matter of quantity over quality. I'm pretty sure these are still only HDMI 1.4 ports.

Asus released these in July 2020 at the height of the work at home pandemic. The increase in home office workers skyrocketed and they tried to fill that need with these 4 port HDMI cards.

Mine may have only one HDMI but it does have “Corporate Stability”.

I just picked up the Asus with GDDR5 and can confirm it works in Big Sur.
The Corporate Stable Model (CSM).

Wow I got it!

Hi Casey,
  • re you using the USB-C <--> USB-A cable that comes in the box with the SSL UF8? Yes, it's the only USB-C -> A cable I have!
  • The USB-C end of the cable must of course be connected to the port labeled USB on the UF8. Yes, the UF8 actually functions perfectly (apart from when all the USB ports freeze)
  • Which version of macOS are you running? 10.15.7
  • When did the USB instability problem start to occur? It has always occurred with any MCU MIDI control surface. It started with the Qcon Pro X, many moons ago, but happened infrequently. At first it didn't happen for quite a while with the UF8, but recently has started happening more often. However, sometimes it will work fine for days, other times USB ports will freeze up within minuets - all without any changes to the system.
  • What changes were made to the system at around that time? None that I know of, the only change was the addition of a control surface via USB - first the Qcon Pro X, now the SSL UF8. Other than this the system was stable so why change anything :) I have made a lot of changes recently trying to resolve the issue but they have all been done since the issue started occurring regularly. Changes I've made: Removed FakePCIID kexts, updated AppleALC, Lilu, Whatevergreen and USBinjectAll to latest versions, cleaned out old kexts from /L/E/, Added SMBUS SSDT described here, updated to BIOS F9j, then tried BIOS F9g (see below). I have also tried resetting all control surface settings, key commands and preferences in Logic Pro X just in case...)
I work around it by screen sharing from my MacBook Pro (2015 running big sur) to save the logic project and then reboot, which is the only way to get USB working again.

One more caveat - the UF8 is supplied with a USB-C <--> USB-C cable. However, the device is not detected when plugged into a USB-C port (with SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V7). I'm using BIOS F9g, downloaded from this thread. BIOS is set up as per the initial instructions in the guide, thunderbolt is working great with the apollo.

I have done limited testing of the UF8 on my MacBook Pro and it seems to be stable. However, it's hard to run a full session on the MacBook because most of the audio plugins used in big sessions aren't licensed to that machine ( and many may not run on big sur yet!). I also can't plug the apollo thunderbolt interface into the mac book as I don't have the right cable. For this reason, I can't completely rule out a fully UF8 or cable, though it seems very unlikely.

My current EFI is attached in case I've missed something obvious but I don't think so...

I can provide a new USB SSDT that enables USB 2 protocol on both Thunderbolt ports. This will let you use the USB-C to USB-C cable.

If your computer has a front panel USB-C port, I can enable USB 2.0 on that as well, but it’s best to try and be of the Thunderbolt ports first.

Will send new SSDT soon.

Update:
  • Temporarily move the file EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/Patched/SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V7.aml to the EFI/CLOVER folder.
  • Copy the attached file to the EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/Patched folder.
  • Reboot.
  • And don't worry about the name of the attached file.
  • Then connect SSL UF8 via USB-C to USB-C cable to either of the two Thunderbolt ports.
  • Is the port any more or less stable?
Note that this SSDT prevents USB 2.0 devices from connecting to the two RED USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports on the rear IO panel.

Awesome, thank you very much! Only have USB 2.0 front-panel ports, currently disconnected while I troubleshoot.

I may try to re-install logic pro, see if that helps, just to rule anything out there. I sometimes use the UF8 with Ableton live and have never experienced the issue there.

If you refresh the webpage you'll see that I uploaded a modified SSDT in previous reply.
