[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Just arrived. Will begin case and component construction in about 1Hr.
Awesome! What case did you get?

Let's continue the Z490 discussion here.

Hello everybody! I was away from my hackintosh since November, and I'm still running in Catalina 15.2! I am quite lost since that time, and, if you could maybe help me, towards the best procedure to update until the Catalina 15.5? And what about OpenCore? Is it easy to switch from clover to that ?
Thanks a lot in advance !
We should upgrade as follows:
  • Make a bootable backup of 10.15.2. Seriously; this must be done. There are unusual pitfalls with the update to 10.15.4 and newer.
  • Then unlock MSR 0xE2 and enable NVRAM by following this guide.
  • Now attempt an in-place upgrade from Catalina 10.15.2 to 10.15.5.
  • If problems occur, please let us know.

@CaseySJ Thanks for the quick reply !! Should I update the kext or other things before doing the upgrade ?

Yes that's a good idea. But a bootable backup must be made first.

After updating Clover and kexts, be sure to boot Catalina 10.15.2 to make sure everything is still working properly.

@CaseySJ I'll do the bootable backup as soon as I have received the 1tb SSD drive as I saw it needs to match my internal drive capacity so probably next week. Hackintosh is still running smooth so no rush for updating ! Do you have links where I can make my own opinion on advantage of switching to open core ?

PS : I have a 2 TB external HDD that I don't use, can I use that as sync with CCC for my 1 TB internal SSD ?

The nice thing about Carbon Copy Cloner is that it's a file-based backup tool. This means that the backup disk only needs to be as large the amount of space used in the source disk. For example:
  • If source is 1TB SSD, but has only 65GB of used space, then backup disk can be 96GB or 128GB in size. Because 96GB is larger than 65GB!

Use this EFI folder, you should only need to add your Serial Numbers to config.plist to get a fully functional stable system.

Hello there and thank you so much for taking the time to check and upload some files for me too !
I am gonna try this EFI folder and see how it fares. For some reasons, the install is now more or less stable (we managed to install all softs and run a recording session, so far so good) though it seems Little Snitch is causing some kind of mess with the kexts and forced me to do a fresh install again because the computer kept crashing right after loading the OS.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your time and consideration, I will post an update later about this !

Have a good day/night !

Ohh that's cool, but SSD is a must have I guess ?

Hi @CaseySJ - is it ok for us to upgrade to 10.15.5? Any particular steps we should follow (like Clover settings, downloading the update from Apple's website or using the system preferences update method?)

Thanks!

Yes it should be fine. At least one person has already done so, but they warned that RadeonBoost kext must be removed prior to updating. It can be copied back afterwards.

Also make a full bootable backup prior to updating.
