I blame intel.

There’s a Dell laptop that uses this same CPU and they have throttling issues too.

People blaming Intel and whatabouting other thin laptops like the XPS for thermal throttling are missing the point. Other laptops do throttle but there's a difference with absurd throttling .

The Dell XPS 15 with i7-8750H clearly blows away the MacBook Pro 15 with i7-8850H. This MacBook performs barely better than a Dell XPS with i5-8300H. So the problem here is that the MacBook provides a very inefficient chassis for a proper cooling solution.

Intel of course is trying to squeeze all the milk it can from the Skylake architecture and 14nm process.

No one is denying that MBP cooling is inefficient, I’m saying that Intel should have already been at 10nm by now and that would help a lot especially with a case this thin.

Obviously Apple is after quietness and thinness, it doesn’t care about heat generation and throttling.

My point is I think Apple saw the Intel roadmap in 2015 and was promised a 10nm cpu by 2017/2018 and never got one.

Even if the i9 throttles it’s still worth having because cinebench results are still better than any 2017/2016 model and apps like adobe or fcpx will be optimized for more multicore sooner or later.

I don't know why nobody is offering this but here my idea... unscrew the bottom plate of the macbook and screw a new extended aluminium bottom plate with space for usb hub ssd extension sd card reader and a kind of heatsink extender maybe with an extra fan and possibly extra battery...I don't know if would be possible to connect one of the usb c ports to the 'HUB' from the inside or if one would need a flat U shaped Usb C connector on the outside... It would make the macbook pro a real pro a bit thicker but you could actually use the power of the 6 core CPU because of better cooling and you would have enough ports and disk storage for anything you need.

That would be harder, but I'd consider it.

The ingenuity of modders is boundless and it's great to read about tips and tricks for either improving performance or cooling, but I can't help thinking that any temperatures as high as those quoted here are scary given the close proximity to a large, flat battery.

Good that Coffee Lake is official though.

Some things to consider if you will be buying a new MBP.

Make sure to read through the comments section at the end as well. A repairability score of 1 really makes me think twice about spending over 2 grand on one of these. At least they've still got Intel chips inside. :)

I found that tear-down scary. You'd need to have the skills of a surgeon, by the looks of it.

Manufacturing must be impressive to watch.

Gallium will alloy with copper to cause the discoloration. Gallium does not affect the "sheen" on the die itself. Clean the stuff off of the die and you can use it to fix your hair.

LOL!

And perhaps the hot-air exiting the fans to dry it ...
