Some things to consider if you will be buying a new MBP.

Make sure to read through the comments section at the end as well. A repairability score of 1 really makes me think twice about spending over 2 grand on one of these. At least they've still got Intel chips inside. :)

Buy a spare heatsink in the event you need to bring the MacBook Pro in for servicing. Problem solved.

Nice find. Very inexpensive swap, provided those are the exact same parts. (May be different with 2018 model, though ifixit tear down doesn’t imply one way or another on the 15"). Although doesn’t address the sheen with the CPU die. Looks like might be a trick to removing the conformal coating as well. But I guess it depends how invasive Apple is going to be in it’s possible future repairs to say, "you voided your warranty, no free repair for you". The non-viscous state of liquid metal probably deters me the most from this trick, even with conformal coatings. If the 15" was $1500, I’d likely do this, but at $3000+...er... not for me. Best of luck for the adventurous.

Gallium will alloy with copper to cause the discoloration. Gallium does not affect the "sheen" on the die itself. Clean the stuff off of the die and you can use it to fix your hair.

You know what would be cool? A nice thin case that spanned the length of the underside of the MBP 15" with a hard/solid U-shaped USB3 connection on each end that would hold the it in place on the bottom side of the macbook pro. It could hold 3 or 4 SSDs. Bonus if it would take NVMe SSDs
I don't know why nobody is offering this but here my idea... unscrew the bottom plate of the macbook and screw a new extended aluminium bottom plate with space for usb hub ssd extension sd card reader and a kind of heatsink extender maybe with an extra fan and possibly extra battery...I don't know if would be possible to connect one of the usb c ports to the 'HUB' from the inside or if one would need a flat U shaped Usb C connector on the outside... It would make the macbook pro a real pro a bit thicker but you could actually use the power of the 6 core CPU because of better cooling and you would have enough ports and disk storage for anything you need.

Wow.
That's sad. Apple what are you doing?
Hackintoshs seem to surpass the original.

I blame intel.

There’s a Dell laptop that uses this same CPU and they have throttling issues too.

In that video, the guy is comparing a lower CPU, i7-8750H, with an i9-8950HK which is what's used in the MacBook Pro. Intel rates the i7-8750H's TDP at 35W and the i9-8950HK's TDP at 45W.

In the video, I saw:
i7-8750H @ 87C
i9-8950HK @ 96.50C
