Overclocking Sandy Bridge 3930k on an Asus board questions

Did you get your OC working Stirfry? I'd been running my 3930k at stock for the last two years (after initially playing with 4.2 to 4.8 oc's), but I just upgraded some components and went to 10.11.4 and thought I'd throw the overclock on it again for fun (@4.2). Had no trouble using the...

    i7-4930K - Asus Rampage IV Extreme - 32GB RAM - GTX 770 4GB [Success!!]

My X79 Hack is about to turn four years old so I just made the jump from 10.10.5 to 10.11.4 (I'm a slow adopter). I always come back to this thread when it's time to do some work, and every time it's just that much better. Thanks again Shilohh (and Tony & the community) for all the assistance...

Realtek ALC898 in ASUS P9X79 Deluxe kernel panic

Pretty sure he set up separate dsdt's for on board audio and hdmi audio for all 3-4 of the boards he was working on. Many of the boards used alc898, so you still might be able to find a solution in there somewhere. Was a great resource, shame he isn't here anymore.

Micro-ATX Asus Rampage IV Gene Question

Sexy lil box. I settled on the Silverstone TJ08-E for the case. Really liked the cooling set up in it with the inverted board. Thanks for the heads up though!

Just got a 3930k What other components should I buy?

I'd lurk for a week and read this thread in particular viewtopic.php?f=14&t=63958 and do a search in the "user builds" of "X79", gather some info.

    Hackintosh cases

Imo, the most "Apple-like" cases are from Lian Li. The Micro-ATX stuff in particular. The new Xigmatek Gigas isn't available in the US yet, but it has a nice all aluminium look to it. I think I have settled on the Silverstone TJ08-E for my build due to the nice cooling performance...

PWM CPU fan control? Reading temperature values?

Let us no how it turns out. A quiet case is a big deal for me, so I am curious how this works out. Thanks.

PWM CPU fan control? Reading temperature values?

Hmmm troubling, you'd hope the fans on a cpu cooler that are plugged into the pwm slots would react well. What's cheaper, replacing the whole heat sink or the fans that came with it?

PWM CPU fan control? Reading temperature values?

I'm still pretty new to this but the fans are just fans right? So any error in the speed being sent to them is likely to be mobo/bios related to the pwm plugs they are in? A different heat sink will still have pwm fans and there is no logic in assuming they will react differently, since you...

    Your First Computer

Would you believe I grew up with this in our family basement? :wtf: I didn't get to mess around with that one, but when I got a little older I quickly got addicted to playing "Adventure" (my dad was one of the three guys who ported it to the VAX) on a VT-52 connected to my dad's VAX on this...

Advice for a new build for video editing

My shopping list is much like yours Artlaw, very interested in a X79 m-atx build. The Asus Gene looks to be the best reviewed board for sure. Good progress is being made by Here To Help on the Asus X79 boards over here if you haven't seen: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=63958

Micro-ATX Asus Rampage IV Gene Question

Yeah, leaning towards a Sabertooth X79 build right now. Looks like there are a few floating around that have worked out well. Still educating myself on how to build a DSDT for it as I'd like to keep he install as clean as possible. Cheers.

Micro-ATX Asus Rampage IV Gene Question

Leaning that direction currently, I just hate huge boxes. But the size difference between some full ATX cases (Midi's) and the Micro-ATX cases just isn't enough to argue over, hence leaning towards a full ATX board/case. (Sabertooth or RIVE most likely)
