[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hello sweet ppl from the interwebs!

I'm currently running this build with Monterey 12.4, OC 0.7.4

Can I update through system preferences to Ventura after a regular OC update? Or do I require any special updates?
Do I need to update BIOS to the newest modded F9i?
It is certainly possible to do an in-place upgrade from Monterey to Ventura, but we must first do this:
  • Make a full bootable backup of Monterey. Things can fail during major (and even minor) macOS upgrades!! We *must* have a full backup to save us!
  • Update to OpenCore 0.8.8. This can be done with HackinDROM app (click here for details)
  • Check if SecureBootModel in config.plist -> Misc -> Security is set to Default (not Disabled)
  • Check if SIP is enabled in config.plist -> NVRAM section (csr-active-config should be 00000000)
  • Then reboot Monterey to make sure it still works properly
Now you're ready to perform in-place upgrade to Ventura.

Thanks! I'll try that over the weekend!

I've asked it to do a couple tasks that I wanted to compare with known working patches. Would anyone care to look them over? I'm not an expert in any of this, but I think I'm asking the right questions.

Has anyone monkeyed-around with ChatGPT to make patches?
What patches? What do you expect?
These chatbots merely regurgitate existing information; they cannot create new information, much less accurate new information. The proverbial monkey with a typewriter is more likely to output the complete works of William Shakespeare than ChatGPT is to produce by itself a meaningful kernel patch/SSDT/kext for your Hackintosh.

@mattbatt

If the Designare proves to be reliable after modifying BIOS memory settings, then that’s the least disruptive option.

If you are forced to consider a change, note that Mac Studio, like all other Apple Silicon Macs, does not support external GPUs. If the Thunderbolt or external “cards” you referred to are not GPUs, then no worries.

An Alder Lake or Raptor Lake Hackintosh is a good option. Raptor Lake (13th Gen) may require some BIOS parameter tweaks to avoid sleep/wake issues. There are a fair amount of posts on this topic here on TonyMac.
Hi @CaseySJ, well I finally got my hack to start freezing again while video rendering, even after it was going so much more smooth after I got the memory stable with BIOS. Here's what happened: I switched my audio to 'digital out' in Premiere because I have a stereo receiver hooked up to the digital out on the Z390 running studio monitors.

I also have headphones hooked to the stereo out.

So it seems something does not like the digital audio out when rendering.

So I switched it back after hard reboot and it kept freezing :( But, what I found was Mac OS's mds_stores was running after the hard reboot and rendering with that using max CPU's caused a panic. So I later let mds_stores run and it rendered (with the audio not being digital out).

  1. ok ignore my last post @CaseySJ, after 15 hours of testing I figured I'd report on what I discovered (it's a mix of my errors, software bugs and unknowns).

I figured out how to always freeze up my machine while rendering: do a VBR 2 pass from Adobe Premiere. It freezes the same way with the GPU's lights all on and the machine locked up.

    WHAT I DID and DISCOVERED
    1. Tried to update Blackmagic Desktop Video drivers, spend half a day on this with horrific results (no device recognized, disabled SIP, removed kexts, downgraded), finally in desperation, I went back to version 12.0 only to discover Adobe Premiere would not recognize it. (Yes, I restarted after clean uninstalls and allowed permissions before opening the app).
I got it working by having a crazy idea: what if I install the latest driver which doesn't work but then install the old driver on top of it without doing an uninstall? Well, it worked

    Still freeze on render

  2. I discovered my SMBIOS was messed up. It showed an iMac 19,1 but in about this mac it was i Mac Pro. Fixed this.

    Still freeze on render

  3. I discovered I had disabled iGPU even though using iMac 19,1, fixed

    Still freeze on render

  4. I discovered through Hackintool my iGPU Platform ID was wrong. Fixed.

    Still freeze on render

  5. I tested numerous RAM frequencies, reinstalled BIOS update, tested CPU voltage.

    Still freeze on render

  6. Finally, I randomly clicked on the aspect ratio in Adobe Premiere's render dialog because when I choose 2 pass VBR, it changes the aspect ratio to "auto". So I put it back to 1 to 1 pixel ratio.

    It rendered!
    :crazy::crazy:

@mattbatt,

Very helpful post. Does “auto” or non-1:1 aspect ratio freeze a real Mac as well (if you have access to one)?

I don't have access to one, but way back in the day on my Dual G5 it did not and mac Hackintosh in 2012 with an NVIDIA GTX 285 and later 485 did not.

VBR 2 pass is unique in that the first pass is math (CPU deciding best compression for each frame) which is written in a text file, second pass reads the text file and encodes. Adobe limits VBR 2 to software encoding only.

Since it is so CPU intensive, I was thinking voltage or memory issues could be the cultprit.

HERE's WHAT I DISCOVERED

I was freezing up again even with 1-to-1 pixel ratio. I loaded optimized defaults, same problem. Changed to a Mac Pro 1,1, deleted iGPU from config and turned off iGPU, same problem.

So then I rendered from Adobe Media Encoder with both an iMac 19,1 with iGPU and Mac Pro 1,1 without iGPU. Both finished the render without freezing. Both encoded the same time: 2:35 for a 3:35 HD video VBR 2 pass target 25 mbs maximum 50 mbs.

This project was a hard one: various clips of resolution (from phones to C100 to DSLR to Blackmagic); various frame rates; various audio but depth and resolutions. Further, I had animated sequences from AfterEffects inserted (not rendered) so it is loading AfterEffects compositions while rendering.

And then multiple audio tracks (42) with various effects.

So this project definitely contained elements which are tricky and can cause freezing.

I'm grateful I could render VBR 2 pass through media encoder.

TAKE AWAY

I'm leaving iGPU on with iMac 19,1 (I also have your boot argument to allow maxium iGPU speed). Playback contained no dropped frames whereas I dropped a few without iGPU and MacPro 1,1.

Also, system is snappier on iMac 19,1

PS
Why do a VBR 2 pass? Because you can set maxium mbs beside the target. What this does is take a frame with detail (like text / graphic animations) and apply the maxiumum mbs encoding while leaving most video to the target mbs.

On youtube, this makes a difference for crisp graphics and text.

It looks like a few folks here have gigabyte z170x-designare.
Can someone share their wisdom and tell me how can I use a Thunderbolt Display 27 with an apple adapter to thb3?
It looks like thunderbolt ports aint working, because when the Hackintosh boots I can only see a black screen.
I connect this monitor prior turning it on, no hot plugging and etc.

What could be the problem?

p.s. I've already updated TB Driver app.
