[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

hello @CaseySJ
I've been using the updated Hackintosh for a couple of weeks now and it's working wonderfully! I plan to copy the system on my NVMe but 2 questions:
1. on your Asus hackintosh guide, you said it's better to avoid Samsung NVMe. I got a Samsung 970 Evo since the beginning of this Hackintosh. Should I buy another brand?
As mentioned above by @brousseau6933, Samsung NVMe SSDs will cause long boot times because of unsupported trim. I would recommend a different brand. I've personally used these brands successfully:
  • WD SN series
  • Crucial P3 and P3 Plus
  • Silicon Power
  • Sabrent Rocket
  • Kingston

2. in order to update to Windows 11, I need to enable TPM 2.0. Is this a problem for our Hackintosh? It's not urgent at all to update Windows, I just wanted to know. Windows is installed on a NVMe, plugged into Thunderbolt.
...
Yes it okay to enable TPM 2.0 in BIOS. We can keep it enabled at all times without any impact to macOS.

you said it's better to avoid Samsung NVMe

Just for the sake of completeness: Optical media can be mounted and used via USB CD/DVD drives.

Thanks! I'm aware (and I need to get one, eventually, for mobile production) -- I was just on a 24 hour deadline and needed to fulfill a client need. I honestly haven't needed an optical drive (to read or burn media) in 5 years.

On an unrelated note: what system ID are people using for their z390?

I've been using imac19,1, but I think it's causing issues with my dGPU rendering -- Compressor is barely using the GPU to transcode, but is hitting the first 8 cores of my CPU hard. (I've tried using unfairvga bootargs to invoke imacpro1,1, but it doesn't seem to have done anything)

** Custom BIOS F9i with Latest Intel Micro Code 0xEC and Intel ME Security Fixes **
Credit: @Elias64Fr

WARNING:
Please install BIOS F9i OFFICIAL version before installing this one
If you are already running BIOS F9i, then you may install the new BIOS directly

Double Warning:
YOU MUST BE RUNNING BIOS F9i (official version) BEFORE PROCEEDING. IF YOU FAIL TO MEET THIS CRITERIA, YOUR MOTHERBOARD WILL NOT BOOT.

Introduction:
When Gigabyte released their latest BIOS F9 (no letter after "9") they fixed some important security vulnerabilities and converted the BIOS into a "capsule" BIOS that we cannot downgrade.

@Elias64Fr has just released a new modified version of the F9i BIOS that includes the fix for "Major vulnerabilities" and also updates the Intel micro-code. More specifically, the modified F9i BIOS contains these changes:
  • Intel CPU Microcode version 0xEC (04/24/2021)
  • Intel ME version 12.0.81.1753 for Security Vulnerabilities

The resulting file is called Z390DESI_modMC_04282021_0906_Rev_0xEC_modME_12.0.81.1753.F9i, and it's attached below.

As always, the decision to use or not use this BIOS is up to you. It is entirely optional. I have tested the new BIOS for half a day now and found no issues.

Procedure:
This version can be flashed with Q-Flash within BIOS Setup. Once again, this you MUST be on BIOS F9i (official version) before you can install this modified version. Failure to follow this requirement will result in motherboard failing to boot. Install that version FIRST if you are not already on it.

If you are on the F9 (no letter) "capsule" BIOS, continue to use that version and do not install this version.
Hi @CaseySJ
I have upgraded BIOS firmware with last CPU Microcodes.

On this new BIOS firmware based on F9i version, I have included last CPU Microcodes version 0xF0 (11/15/2021) and CPU Microcodes version 0xF4 (07/31/2022).

Microcodes has been found on last Apple iMac19,1 firmware included on macOS Ventura 13.2 update.

I haven't tested this update because I'am on another hack based on MSI Z490.

@CaseySJ, if you can, Could you verify it and post it ?

Thanks :)

Hello @Elias64Fr,

Nice to see you again!

I’ll first install official F9i and then the modified version.

UPDATE:
  • Confirmed -- it works
  • We should install official F9i first to be safe

Hi @CaseySJ its been a while since you helped, im still thankful. :headbang::clap:
Last time I tried used Clover. But here Im ready for fresh install with Opencore.

OpenCore 0.8.8
packed with latest release of kext, I've gathered what seems to be needed from the original guide and based on my system. Downloaded macOS Ventura version 18.2.01 - bootable USB is ready.

I kicked out the Geforce GTX 970 for a msi Radeon RX 580 armor oc.
The config.plist I've modded is from this guide by Dalisoft, I have chosen his config.plist because of the same i9-9900k Coffee Lake S CPU and Motherboard.

Before install im still not sure how to change or select right options for the GPU?

Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0) updated to BIOS F12

The Titan Ridge is till in the same port, I kept the SSDT file in the kext.
It's also updated with a Samsung SSD 980 m.2 nvme in the M2M slot

I think I still owe a cup of coffee from this thread help

/J

Hello @LekerHack,

The RX580 is natively supported and your config.plist looks correct (specifically, boot arg agdpmod=pikera is not present, which is correct).

If you're installing Monterey or Ventura, we should change SecureBootModel to Default (instead of Disabled).

We should also enable OpenHfsPlus.efi:

I've made these and other changes in attached config.plist. Note: I removed serial numbers from PlatformInfo so please copy them all back before use.
