Hi Casey, first of all I want to thank for all your work. Built my hackintosh this last week and it was a smooth build and install thanks to you. My UAD Apollo has been working flawlessly, which was my main concern.

I would like to ask you about temps.

My build is using the 9900KS with a AOI Corsair H115i PRO all inside a Raidmax Delta Prime case.

The radiator is mounted in the front pushing hot air out. I've replaced the radiators fans to Noctua ones. And the original fans are on top of the case pulling air from the outside. And there's another fan in the back push air out.

But even though there are 5 fans running, my CPU goes to 100 celsius when benchmarking using Geekbench, Cinebench, and when running Folding@Home to help medicine. The fans runs faster, I've changed the fan curves in BIOS and they seem to follow the curve, but is not enough to prevent the CPU from getting to 100 celsius.

Is it normal? Am I doing something wrong?

Is that the price we pay for 8 cores pegged to 5 GHz!!?? Some things to check:

• Does the Corsair come with pre-applied thermal paste? I tend to wipe the stock thermal paste and replace it with a high quality alternative. I've tried both Arctic MX-4 and Thermal Grisly (either Kyronaut or Conductonaut).
• Do the fans and pump on the Corsair appear to ramp up and down in accordance with dynamic load?
• What temps do you see under more idle conditions? Such as when simply browsing this website?

Here's my test bench with an Intel i5-9600K (6 cores, no hyper threading). CPU temps never exceeded 43C on a single BeQuiet! Dark Rock air cooler with one fan.

have you unplugged and re-plugged both ends of the video cable between your card and display?

Not tried that will do it asap and but i think that will not workout as when i shutdown the system its shows the correct colours and while getting the desktop ready after rebooting i can't see the colours working fine for me it was working fine previously just after the update it started doing this and got other problem also with the machine can't select the Startup disk getting different errors on that and even can't get rid of the install option from clover boot options

The hard lock where I had to restart with the button just happened again. I had removed the library and also chmoded ~/Photos to 000 to prevent the photos library from being recreated.

Do you or anyone know of any other places to check, or ways to gather more information?


edit: I've now updated to clover 5107, Lilu 1.4.2, AppleALC 1.4.7, and WhateverGreen 1.3.7, and then did the upgrade to 10.15.4. The upgrade ran into the "bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk" that others mention in the upgrade thread, however it appears to have updated. The install partition is still in the boot loader though. The very first boot post upgrade immediately hung before most windows could fully paint, which was not great. Second reboot has been okay now though for 30 minutes so far.

Let me suggest the following Process of Elimination to try and isolate the culprit:

• If you have another AMD GPU such as RX570 or RX580 or Vega or Radeon VII, use that in place of the RX 5700 XT.
• If you do not have another AMD GPU, then configure your config.plistfor Platform ID = 0x3E9B0007 (non-headless) so that iGPU can drive your monitor.
  • Physically disconnect and remove the RX 5700 XT. Be sure to turn power off and flip PSU to OFF.
  • Don't forget to flip open the PCie retaining clip at the back end of the long PCIe slot.
  • There are 3 video ports on the rear IO panel:
    • Thunderbolt port 1 = this will drive a DisplayPort monitor with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
    • Thunderbolt port 2 = this will drive a DisplayPort monitor with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
    • HDMI. This requires the HDMI frame buffer patch, which Hackintool can install for you as shown below.
  • Run your system on iGPU alone for some time. Do the crashes stop??

I noticed something else after flashing the thunderbolt firmware: Netflix is working in Safari on my Samsung thunderbolt screen! Might be that the firmware mod also solves the DRM issue in this case/connection...

If nothing else changed (i.e. same shikivga as before) then you may be right! Yet another benefit...

Hey Guys i updated to the 10.15.4 today as well i updated to clover 5107 an re did all the steps for clover except i updated to kexts Lilu 1.4.2, AppleALC 1.4.7, and WhateverGreen 1.3.7 , i also upgraded to the 9900k from the 8700 no issues from what i can tell yet exept for a very minor nuisance , i had my config set to boot into my macOS without ever loading the clover menu screen i did not change anything in my config but now it doesn't do that, it loads into the clover menu and i have to choose my installation to boot(first wold problem i know ) , does anybody know why though ? also CaseySJ my good man i noticed you upgraded to the 5700 XT , i am planning to do the same ,you might have posted already about it and maybe i missed it ,but how has it been ? any advise on that ?

Hello @Nikos87,

Have you tried setting Timeout to 0 or clicking the -1 checkbox?

Regarding the RX 5700 XT, if the extra GPU power is necessary then it may be a good choice, but beware of some reports of random crashes. This has never happened to me with the Power Color Red Dragon version of the card -- and we believe Apple has fixed one of the root causes in 10.15.4 related to face-detection background process for Photos -- but it's probably best to wait until people report their experiences.

Because you made a full bootable backup before updating, just boot from that backup disk and see if the problem is still there in 10.15.3.
