[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hey, just wanted to thank you @CaseySJ for helping me, without you I would probably still be struggling. I wanted to ask is there anything else I should install or do next? I am also a photo/video business person and would like to have everything setup perfectly, i read from your first post about this headless system option. Is mine on it or not?

I tried FwRuntimeServices and and OcQuirks (original) for several days and had no problems. Am now trying OcQuirks-4. It booted fine.
Didn't try 2 or 3.
If there are no problems, I will leave it alone and enjoy. It even sleeps dependably now!

Glad to hear it! Currently sipping coffee at a local café, but I believe I set headless platform ID 0x3e980003 already.

The next steps are to test USB ports with both USB 2 and 3 devices, test sleep and wake. Then make a full bootable backup. There’s a Catalina guide for this that is linked from Post #1 in the section “Easy Bootable Backup”.

Then you’re ready to begin using the system. Watch for any reliability issues. Also look through “Going the Extra Mile” for any extended setup that might be beneficial to you.

P.S. Do not skip the bootable backup process. You will thank yourself a million times in the future!

To overcome these restrictions, we can buy a PCIe x1 card that provides 4 internal SATA ports. The following cards should work:
For 6 internal SATA ports we can purchase the following PCIe x4 card (physically a x4 card, but electrically x2). Requires a long slot:
I got the 6 port card here and it throws up an unrecognized/uninitialized partition called "ASMT109x- Config Media." It is 104.9MB. Any idea how to hide that guy to get rid of the unrecognized drive message at startup?

Hi all,

Firstly, huge thanks to @CaseySJ for this guide. I'm having a problem with USB - every now and then (at random intervals from very quickly after boot to several hours after boot) all of my USB devices stop working. Mouse, keyboard, any external disks etc. disappear from the system. I can still log-in via screen-sharing, so the machine is still working. I've done a lot of Googling, but can't find anything to help me resolve this. Any help/advice gratefully received.

Thanks
Hello @kellymac12

This might happen if your USB ports are overloaded with multiple hubs linked together. In any case please download and run IORegistryExplorer and select “File —> Save As...”, then upload the saved file.

Hi, first thank you for this guide. I have 2 problems. I used this guide for my installation, and everything seems to be working except when I plug my Apollo twin Mk2 in the USB-c port with the Thunderbolt adapter. It gives me a message that my Mac doesn't support Thunderbolt over USB-c. And the other one is, after the post-install, my CPU name in About this Mac switched from the correct one which is i7-9700K to Intel core i9. My configuration is Z390 Aorus Pro WiFi, i7-9700K, RX 590, 970 EVO Plus.
Welcome to the forum! Note that we enforce the Rules quite strictly. Please enter your CPU, Graphics and Motherboard information in your profile (just click here) so it appears under your avatar. This saves us from asking for the same information repeatedly.

Your motherboard does not come with on-board Thunderbolt. Are you using a Thunderbolt add-in-card (AIC)? If so, which one?

That message is probably coming from one of the drives connected to the card and not from the card itself. You can test that by disconnecting all drives and checking whether the message still appears.

If the message is in fact due to a connected drive, run “Disk Utility”, select “View —> Show all devices” and click through each of the disks/partitions that you see. Note the Format or Scheme of each one. Or post a screenshot.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll do some investigating as I do have a fair number of USB devices attached. IORegistryExplorer dump attached.

Please try connecting some of the USB devices directly to the ports on rear IO panel -- this will rebalance the load on the USB bus.

Has anyone using the gc-titan ridge card updated the FW using the B19.1017.1 update? It's dated 10/17/2019. Not seeing any info posted about it.
