Thinking about upgrading from El Capitan to MacOS Sierra,

good idea or bad?

Proudly running a sandy bridge system

i7 2600 k
32 gb ram
nvidea 970 4 gb super clock gpu

had to change current system definition from mac pro 3,1 to imac 14,2
should i just do a clean install upgrade or direct upgrade using clover?

You can do a direct upgrade with Clover. Put FakeSMC, appropriate Ethernet kext in EFI/Clover/kexts/other. Note better to use iMac 13,2 for your hardware.

Thanks for the tip will give that a try after my time machine back up.

I'm going to run a few test with Yosemite, el capitan and Sierra

alright just changed my system definition thanks for that tip using Safari ATM going to put it through a few stress test to make sure it doesn't crash. crossing fingers.

Hey pcw3d, how did this all go?

I ask because I am in the exact same position - Sandy Bridge with El Cap, wanting to upgrade to Sierra, and would love to know what your experience was (and if you kindly have any recommendations) before I go ahead and try it myself haha.
