pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

I ended up purchasing a Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro + and can confirm that it appears the fan issue is not present with that card, except with the latest beta version the fan occasionally will not return to silent and a H.265 video must be played to make the card quiet again.. Looks like Apple is fixing things

My guess is that since the Nitro + has a non-reference cooler, the fans are entirely controlled by the video card's firmware.

How do the fans behave with High Sierra?

@pastrychef What smbios do you use? iMacPro1,1 or iMac18,3?
Just asking out of curiosity since with the iMacPro smbios, I cannot get AGPM working for the Vega 64 card. If I use the iMac 18,3 smbios I can use the dAGPM.kext to enable GPU Power management for the iGPU and the Vega GPU.

EDIT: It seems that with iMac18,3, there is no need for dAGPM.kext since I get AGPM working for the Vega card natively.

I've tried both in the past but I'm currently using iMac18,3.

I still think that your mouse stutters are due to cables. You can test by using HDMI cable instead of DisplayPort cable.
Unfortunately that's not possible, HDMI can't do 4k at 60Hz and 30Hz is absolutely horrible.

I meant to just use it to test for mouse lag. If there's no lag with HDMI, you know your cables are the problem.

Right, but that doesn't fix the problem - I still have to live with either 30Hz on HDMI that lags or with mouse sturrer at 60Hz that doesn't lag.

1. Test with HDMI.
2a. If the lag is still there, you know the problem is not your DisplayPort cables.
2b. If there is no mouse lag, you know the problem is your DisplayPort cables.
3. If 2b is true, buy better DisplayPort cables.
4. Go back to using DisplayPort so you can get 4K@60Hz.

It doesn't say it is supported by Apple, however MacRumors mentioned it doesn't have any fan issues.

In High Sierra, the fans seem to run at low / medium speed, not maximum thankfully.

I think I will stick to the iMac18,3 definition for proper GPU ASPM support.

But ever since switching from the 1080Ti to the Vega 64, I must say the experience has been soo much better, everything is crystal smooth and there is absolutely no lag.

My LG 38UC99 monitor is FreeSync compatible, and when enabled in Windows, even the Windows 10 UI is smoother compared to when using the 1080Ti! Just have to remember to disable FreeSync in MacOS since that results in the monitor acting weirdly due to MacOS not supporting FreeSync.

The only annoyance I have is that PowerNap doesn't seem to be waking up hourly and performing TimeMachine backups, apart from that a perfect build.

Yeah, I suspect that your fans not running at full speed has nothing to do with Mojave public beta and more to do with the firmware doing its job.

My experience switching from GTX 1080 to Vega are pretty much the same. It's hard to quantify it in words to another. It really needs to be experienced by a current Nvidia user.

Not sure why power nap isn't working for you... It seems to work fine here. I can't say for sure if my system is doing Time Machine backups when sleeping because there usually isn't that much that needs backing up on my main system drive and most backups are probably done when awake...

One needs to experience the smoothness for themselves and they will understand. The only issue I seem to have is that with my wide 3840x1600 monitor, the initial boot screens are very low resolution compared to the 1080Ti, is that the case with your monitor?

Are you able to run this in terminal so I can see how often your computer is waking up? If you could do that on your Mojave Beta instance of MacOS. TimeMachine is meant to make "Hourly Backups", and that certainly isn't the case for me and why I'm wondering.

Code:
log show --style syslog | fgrep "Wake reason"

Gonna try a similar build using a Asus ROG Strix B360-G, i3-8100, 2x4GB 2400mhz DDR4, Sapphire RX480 Nitro+, but will read all 295+ pages of thread for tips.... Last intel build I did was Moarfishs Golden B75M build.....

Non-"Z" 300-series motherboards will require xhci-300-series-injector.kext instead of xhci-200-series-injector.kext in the /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/ folder. Not sure about the SATA injector. The USB layout will also be different so you will have to map out your own SSDT for USB. Everything else should work.

I deliberately left the computer untouched since last night. I tried to leave it sleeping for as long as possible, but I needed to use my computer.

Btw, even when I'm only a few feet away from my computer, I can't hear when it wakes up from sleep. Gotta love these Noctua fans and the Vega fan fix kext!!
