You could clone to another drive. Reformat you NVMe drive back to HFS+ and clone back again?
Carbon copy cloner supports this.

I do have a backup copy of my NVME drive on a SSD using CCC. The SSD is also APFS. I guess I could try this

Are you saying that CCC can make a backup from apfs to HFS+ without any issues ?

I'd hate to promise you it would all be ok but it did work successfully for me.

My steps:
App Store > Update > Restart > choose Install macOS in Clover > wait about 2 mins
-s boot flag
mount -uw /
rm /Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext
reboot
set 0x00 for CsrActiveConfig or boot parameter (deselect all options)
nv_disable=1 boot arg boot with 7mb graphic memory
Install last Nvidia web driver
Reboot
Black Screen
Reboot
-s boot flag
mv /Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext /Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext.bak
reboot
nv_disable=1 boot arg
Boot success but just 7mb graphic
AGDPfix
mv /Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext.bak /Library/Extensions/NVDAStartupWeb.kext
Restart
DONE!

Cannot disable/remove EmuVariableUefi64. Unable to boot if I do.

7200U, Samsung 960 Evo NVMe laptop. No Nvidia.

I have two high saw one in SSD of use and another HDD of security. I had beta 5 installed and the beta version 1 came out of the next update that gave me an error and there was no way to install it. I decided to install the beta version of the active version and it was all good. As in the betas with the sound and the correct graph. Just not yet there update for CUDA.

Update successful :

- installing new apfs into clover bootloader
- downloading update from appstore
- installing (no menu "Install from HD..." when reboot is asked)
- waiting for update 15 min avg.
- There, i have my session that needs to be opened.
- Updating Nvidia (no change nowhere, installing as is)
- reboot
- all is fine : audio trim...

I was wondering if trim was needed whith apfs.

- installing new apfs into EFI/EFI/CLOVER/drivers64UEFI
- downloading and installing update from appstore
- The machine reboot aprox 3 time
- At last reboot after login =>auto updating Nvidia
- reboot
- no need to reinstall audio (toleda 130)

Everything working well.

Trim is okay with some SSDs with HFSJ+.
APFS is okay with certain SSDs some has issues.
I wouldn't recommend migrating to APFS its new and has bugs.

my hack is working ok with APFS but a bit slow boot. I have trim enabled but is it possible to disable trim? Maybe that is the issue?
