A bit of topic, but have you considered ditching the stock cooler?

I got this after years of buying overpriced coolers and I'm really happy with it.

...just sayin' :)

ive already picked up a Corsair H60 for my cooling needs. After i resolve this temperature issue, ill replace the heatsink.

Wait what? If you already have the H60, put the H60 on now and see what the temps are like. If the temps are still crappy, you know that the issues doesn't lie with the cooling and it could be a fault with the CPU itself.

Ha I will, I plan to of course. But the temps shouldnt even be above 70C with the standard heatsink. So I'm going to try to figure out the issue here first and then move on to the H60. the whole point of stress testing before installing the H60 was to see what kind of improvement I'd get by using the H60 over the heatsink. So I'm taking it one step at a time.

Ah fair enough. Personally, I'd just swap out the stock cooler for the H60 and hope that the temps are good so I could say "gah, stupid stock cooler sucks" and forget about it. :D

FYI all my Vcore settings are at 1.224V

Removed the stock heatsink. about 1/3 of the pre-applied thermal paste was clearly not pressed to the processor, as it was still neat on the heatsink and the CPU had no paste on a small section. i examine the back of the mobo and the heatsink was completely seated, all pins totally in place.

i reseated it, pressing down firmly to get the thermal paste onto the CPU. i then removed the heatsink again, and rotated it once, then reseated it. powered up, did another stress test, and my numbers are now min 32-36C and max 76-80C. a definite improvement, and still quite high, but I have a feeling my heatsink is particularly shoddy. Keep in mind, I have done NO overclocking yet with a standard Vcore of 1.224. So in my opinion, this is still a unusually high temperature that I am blaming on a bad heatsink, which I am replacing today with an H60. Does anyone think there is anything within the CPU I need to worry about? Or should I just move forward with the H60?

I would say just move on with the H60, it sounds like you have a fairly crappy stock heatsink. If you're still getting bad figures with the H60 then you might need to look into CPU faults and so on.

Let me know how you get on with the H60, actually - I'd quite like one myself and I'd be interested to know what they're like.

Absolutely. I'm gonna pony up my fans on the back of the case with the H60. fan, radiator, fan. all blowing out :p
