Dual monitor not working on r9 270

Trying to get a dual monitor setup on my r9 270
output one-
dvi (a) to vga, vga connected to the monitor
Output 2-
Dvi (d) hooked up to my monitor
receiving a message on my first monitor saying cannot display this video mode it is an old dell monitor
they both work fine on their own. OSx can find both monitors so therefore seems to be a internal monitor problem

It's probably your DVI to VGA adapter. IIRC, DVI to VGA adapters only work on the DVI-I, not DVI-D connections. So, make sure your DVI to VGA connector is on the R9 270's DVI-I connector.

Does the older Dell have any other connection besides VGA...like HDMI? I ask because maybe another port is worth a try.
