[GUIDE] OC Monterey Z490 Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme + Core i5 10500 / i9 10900K

Hello guys, I'm finally trying that build (Z490 xtreme + 19 10900k + Wd SN850), the Sn850 was unavailable for weeks here.
Anyways, I created an USB drive, with OC 0.7.8, and an installer for Monterey 12.3, and i get a stop sign, a graphic glitch and a freeze (see pics).

Any idea of what I am doing wrong ?

Bit of context : I already did a drive copy from my working Samsung 970 (my actual workstation under 12.1) to the SN850 with CCC, and OC didn't show the possibility to boot it on the picker. So I decided to start the installer form the picker to see how good it would go and if it would give the possibility to install on the SN850.

Thanx for the help if you have time !

try all ports, use a usb2.0 stick

Hi Bergier3K,

Glad to hear you finally got your drive. As for the drive data copying, unfortunately I don't think the CCC is going to help. Unfortunately Apple has heavily restricted system access since Big Sur and Monterey so backup software like CCC aren't able to create a fully bootable copy. The only way to get a proper copy with a NVMe or SSD is to use a physical USB dock cloner or similar device. Either that or create a proper installer using the macOS createinstallmedia' command under Terminal.

As for the bootup errors I'd suggest enabling USBInjectall.kext and disabling USBPorts.kext in the settings to see if it works better (remember to disable XHCIPortLimit). And if you are not using an AMD dGPU, you will need to remove the agdpmod=pikera argument from the NVRAM boot-arg section if it is present. Also remember to populate the config.plist with your UUID, ROM and board serials under PlatformInfo before usage.

@Middleman Hi, thanx for the help, may I abuse a bit more of your kindness ?

I managed to install Monterey in a breeze after enabling LegacyUSB in the bios, and using a back USB2 rather than the front USB3. I don't know which of these two tweaks did the trick, but all is perfect except one thing.

I use a BCM43xx (don't remember the last digits) on a pcie 1 adapter (the short pcie slot) that works OOB in Monterey (it performs perfectly in my actual Monterey setup). Of course when I plugged it in i realised 2 things :
  1. The z490 Xtreme doesn't have any pcie1 slots. I know under Windows environment one can plug a small pcie card on a long slot without a problem. But I don't know how good it works under an Apple environment...
  2. The adapter needs an internal USB 2 slot to operate. I remembered then that you told me you disabled the USB2 header in your port mapping.
So of course, I don't have any internet access on the new setup.

I think changing the USB mapping by enabling the header and disabling another USB port would work (unless just enabling the header would still fit in the port limit ?).

I have mapped USB layouts for my current setup, and i remember it being long, tedious and honestly overwhelming for me. If you have the time could you help a bit on this matter ? Maybe you still have a map of the ports somewhere.

I know it is always better do learn by practice than asking for help, but I find myself short for time, and a bit overwhelmed but the USB mapping.

Cheers !

So little update on my situation. I have tried to plug the airport card in the built-in m.2 slot (i have an adapter) instead of the intel wifi, and still no wifi. So I guess the problem is not related to the USB mapping.

The airport works flawlessly on my normal workstation, under Monterey 12.1, without any Brcm kext.

I found somewhere that enabling DisabledIoMapper would help, I tried and again no wifi.
Vt-D is enabled, could that be a problem ?

Does anyone have any idea ?

Thanx again !

Hi Bergier3K,

Right. If that is how the card works (with PCIe slot) then slotting it into a longer slot should be no problem.
In my experience macOS not only works still with the PCIe slots but even with legacy PCIe cards like Adaptec or Areca SAS/SCSI cards. So long as the card is recognised on boot up by the main system (and the device driver is present in macOS), macOS should be able to pick it up.

As for your USB 2 ports being inactive, you could try using Corpnewt's USBMap tool to see how that works for you. The setup process with USBMap is pretty much automatic - you just need to populate the relevant ports. As it goes I did not disable all of my USB 2 ports, only those that weren't used that often and within the 15 port limit (mostly internal ones).

If you're still having issues with the wifi then may I suggest trying it with a USB-key based wifi card, another PCIe wifi card (like TPLink WDN4800) or try using the system's onboard LAN ports. The Aquantia 10Gbe should work under Monterey with my recent EFI update.

Thanx for your answer Middleman ! I have made progress, in a kind of sideways trajectory. I installed back and activated the intel wifi card, as you said it should work, and I left my PCIe card connected : I now have wifi from the intel chip and Bluetooth from the PCIe card.

So the card is well recognised for bluetooth, but some quirk or kext is in the way of it being added as a network interface (sysreport shows well that the wifi card is the intel one). I might post on a different thread that is more specialised with that kind of wifi card, just to be 100% perfectionist.

That situation is fine with me, i don't care if works half on one and half on the other.

However, there is still a little glitch with he wifi. If I turn the system off and restart, the wifi interface cannot find a valid IP in the DHCP pool to connect to. I have to restart my router or connect to another router I have in the house, disconnect, and then it is able to find an IP address.

Any idea on that ?

Otherwise the system seems to be stable and 100% operational, with a dramatic increase in boot time (like 10x or 20x faster), thanx to the SN850 (over the 970 evo and its trim problems).

Thanx again, my build is 99% complete now, and I owe it to your detailed build guide!

Glad to hear you got it going!

As for the wifi/bluetooth glitch, it could be one of two issues. If you're using Monterey, the ideal kext to use is Airportitlwm.kext - but it's possible you may have to use itlwm.kext instead. As for the Bluetooth you may just have to disable the IntelBluetoothinjector.kext.

Little update @Middleman, I noticed that in the config SSDT-SBUS-MCHC.aml was enabled, but the file was not in the ACPI folder. Was it intentional?

I compiled a custom one, but it didn't change my wifi dilemma...

No it should have been included in the ACPI. I guess that was a minor mistake on my part.
