[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hi Casey,
For a first build (for a friend of mine), would you recommend a Z390, z490 or Z590?
  • If your friend can wait up to 2 months, I would recommend Z590.
    • By then we will know just how compatible or incompatible it is.
    • We can guess that iGPU on Rocket Lake may not be compatible, so AMD GPU could be necessary.
  • If your friend wants or needs a system now, I would definitely recommend Z490.
    • It is perfectly compatible with Comet Lake processors.
    • It can accommodate Rocket Lake processors as well, but then iGPU may not be compatible.

Hi! Hoping someone can help figure this out. Since updating to 11.2.1 I've been getting some KPs, usually during, right before or after sleep. Once it happened in the middle of working on something. AFAIK I haven't made any other changes. Using OC 0.6.6 with Casey's EFI folder with only a couple of modifications (changes to USB mapping, and using iMacPro smbios). The panic logs are very sparse, so I'm having trouble figuring out what the cause could be. Here's an example:

Code:

HDMI signal from boot up query.....

Guys - my build is running great but I have had an issue I have not been able to resolve since switching to OC. If the machine has been shutdown for a while - on the next boot I get no signal to the monitor (seems to be booting fine in the background) - a quick restart and signal returns all fine. If the machine is running and I shutdown or restart and boot back up right away all is fine. So seems to be when it has been shut down for a while..... any ideas?

Have you tried to Switch OFF/ON the monitor instead of restart ?

Yes - makes no difference on the monitor. I have switched off and unplugged etc - seems very odd as once you do the restart it comes up with signal immediately!

Some questions and suggestions:
  • What is the make/model of the monitor?
  • What is the make/model of the RX 580 GPU?
  • Are you using a straight HDMI-to-HDMI cable (no adapters)?
  • In BIOS, try both CSM Support set to Enabled and then to Disabled
  • Which version of BIOS are you running? We should avoid F9j.
  • When you say you get "no signal to the monitor", does this mean that the Gigabyte Splash Screen and Clover/OpenCore boot menu are also affected? In other words, the monitor is off the entire time?

Please run Activity Monitor from the Applications --> Utilities folder and sort the list by % CPU. Keep this window running in the background. When a kernel panic occurs, make a note of the top two processes on the list and their "% CPU" value.

UPDATE:
  • I believe Apple released a modified version of 11.2.1 yesterday (Monday). Are you using that version?

If you have another monitor, particularly one without a legacy VGA port, or a recent flat screen TV, please check if this problem happens there.

You said this problem happens when the "machine has been shutdown for a while". Does this mean:
  • Machine's power was cut? Examples include:
    • If machine is connected to a power strip or UPS, the strip or UPS was turned off.
    • The power switch on the machine's PSU was flipped to the OFF position.
    • The power plug was pulled from the wall socket.
