[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Recent contributions by @joevt and @Inqnuam for simplifying the manipulation of Thunderbolt DROM have been added to Quick Reference to Mini-Guides and Micro-Guides at the top of Post #1. In particular, links are in Section 8, which is devoted to all things Thunderbolt.

I still expect to post a Mini-Guide for ThunderboltUtil and to update each of the Thunderbolt DROM Micro-Guides. Coming soon.

Plan C:
  • Find a spare USB flash disk or use an existing USB install disk.
  • If using a new USB flash disk, format the disk in Disk Utility:
    • Name: Boot Test
    • Format: MacOS Extended (Journaled)
    • Scheme: GUID Partition Map
  • Mount EFI partition of the USB flash disk.
  • If there's an EFI folder in the EFI partition, rename the EFI folder to something else, such as EFI-OLD.
  • Follow Step 1 of the Catalina 10.15.4 Mini-Guide except for the 3rd bullet (3rd bullet copies macOS installer to the USB disk, which we don't want).
  • Download the ZIP file from the same Catalina Mini-Guide. You will find 2 config files there:
    • config-IGPU.plist
    • config-AMD-GPU.plist
  • Ignore the first one. Instead, copy your existing RtVariables and SMBIOS sections into config-AMD-GPU.plist. You can use a text editor like BBEdit or a Plist Editor such as ProperTree to copy those two sections.
  • Then rename config-AMD-GPU.plist --> config.plist.
  • Remember to follow the other instruction in Step 1 of Catalina 10.15.4 Mini-Guide, including copying drivers, kexts, and ACPI files from the ZIP to the new CLOVER folder.
  • Then boot from the USB flash disk by pressing F12 at BIOS splash screen and choosing the USB disk.
  • At Clover Boot Menu, select the normal option to boot into macOS.
  • Does it work?

So is this only if a simple combo update process fails? Or should I follow this anyway as a fail-safe option?

Always start with a full bootable backup. The update from 10.15.3 to 10.15.4 was very troublesome. It was the worst update experience! :) I strongly recommend following "Plan C" in that post. There is a 90% chance of failure if Plan C is not followed.
o_O
Indeed. Any known reason why?
Seems that the search keyword should begin with a letter, not a number.

Noted. Thanks.
Does the same apply to 10.15.5?

Interesting (not in a good way :)). The screenshot says "power supply unavailable". Please try this procedure from Post #1:

I completed Steps 1-3 as recommended several times, but I still get the same "power supply unavailable" error.

I went through the whole Post #1 again, double-checked my BIOS settings and config file. Although I had tried it before, I moved my USB mic to one of the black ports.

Another thing I tried was adjusting the USB 3.0 DAC-UP voltages up at 0.1 increments and plugging the USB mic in one of those ports, but no joy.

My power supply is a Corsair RM750i. Could it be that it just doesn't have the horsepower to fully power the USB ports?

I attached some files, maybe they will be helpful?

I am running the GC-Titan Ridge with patched NVM50 (@Elias64Fr/@CaseySJ) and an LG 4K UltraFine 24" monitor. I am currently running 3 monitors in my configuration. With all of my tests, I have found that with patched firmware, I must have a monitor connected directly to my GPU. My TB3 monitor will not activate during boot until it's almost completely loaded to the desktop. This is consistent with your experience. Here's a report on my latest findings:

My Latest Testing

Thanks for confirming with your experiences! Is the patched NVM 50 firmware floating around in this thread? If so would you be able to link me to it? I did some googling but wasn't able to find it. Also have you noticed any differences between patched 23 vs. patched 50?
