[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Just awesome! Love that distro-block/pump/res thing with two sets of radiator loops. (What is the make/model of that?) Finally someone posts a photo of their custom hardline build... :) I haven't personally graduated to that level as I mentioned once before in this thread, namely:
  • Freshman: air cooler
  • Sophomore: all-in-one liquid cooler
  • Junior: custom soft tubing
  • Senior: custom hardline tubing
I've been stuck at the sophomore level... :)

Really appreciate the positive feedback. All of the watercooling parts were sourced from ekwb -- since this is my first build I want to keep things as simple and compatible as possible. I highly recommend that you give it a try -- it can be scary but super fun once everything comes together!

I actually do have one, but I haven't used/tried it yet.

I think it's an interesting idea to pursue, but I don't have a lot of hope for it solving my actual issue as I have so few USB devices. Aside from just a keyboard, mouse, and the bluetooth card (on the internal USB header), the only other device I have is the Ableton Push 2 (which, you could definitely consider a complex device, but it does have it's own external power supply). Thinking about it, I do think I tend so see the issue occur more often than now when the Ableton Push 2 controller is turned on and I'm using it, but.... I *think* I have seen the issue occur without it being on too. It's happened so many times now, I honestly don't remember for sure though.

In either case, I'm going to wait a decent while longer to see if the Clover/EFI changes have impacted the USB issues for me before trying anything else. I wish the issue was more readily duplicable...

I was hoping things had improved, as I rearranged all my USB devices and managed to work for 4/5 hours yesterday and 3 this morning, so was assuming it was possible to find a stable setup and stick with that, but unfortunately that's no longer the case - everything has just frozen. I'm leaning more and more to dodgy motherboard/CPU, as other people are having such success with this board and this config.

@CaseySJ there's nothing to be gleaned from the lack of Thunderbolt information in the PCI section of SysInfo, is there?

Thanks all

Yes, that is required. Please have another look at the Mojave-to-Catalina transition guide below. Every step must be followed. Alas, there are no shortcuts here! As always, a full backup of Mojave should be made ahead of time.
I tried following your guide:
- I had already unlocked MSR 0xE2 register
- I deleted all the kext listed from /Library/Extensions and emptied the trash.
- I have removed Clover RC scripts
- I rebuilt the kernel cache by running Kext Utility
- I deleted (doing a back up first) the old EFI folder first and empty the trash.
- I copied EFI folder from the new macOS CatalinaUSB install drive that I had already created to EFI partition of the internal Mojave SSD
- I restarted to test this configuration with the macOS mojave system drive before installing macOS Catalina in dual boot configuration
but it doesn't seem to work starting from macOS mojave drive. The boot process crashes after a while.
This is the screenshots of the output during startup:

I'd be interested to see your experience if you keep everything else the same and opt to just replace the board, but to be honest, I don't personally think this is a board related issue. I think there's some other underlaying cause that is only hitting a smaller subset of users due to their specific use case.

I've replaced every component in this system (minus the power supply, motherboard, and case) and the issue still remains. Considering I can push the system hard for hours and hours at a time under Windows doing gaming on high resolutions/settings and not see the issue (or any other problem), I'm thinking the PSU is perfectly fine. More so, I've seen similar USB issues across 2 different Gigabyte boards now, and USB oddities on my old ASRock board I had before those boards. If it was simply a matter of it being related to a component of the board (or the board itself), then I either have the worst luck ever, or...there's more of an underlaying OSX/Hackintosh related issue at hand.

If you do opt to replace the board for good measure, I think it'd be really interesting to see everything left as it was exactly (same devices in same USB ports, etc), to see if the issue continues.

Interesting. Were the two Gigabyte boards Z390, or some other chipset? My previous machine was a Z97, and that was rock-solid for three years... Tempted to dig it out!

In System Information --> PCI, we should see two entries for Thunderbolt: One entry for the NHI or Thunderbolt controller, and the other for Thunderbolt USB 3 controller.

This is my PCI page - no TB hardware showing:

The Thunderbolt SSDT and/or SSDT-DTPG might not be present in the CLOVER/ACPI/patched or OpenCore OC/ACPI folder. Please post a screenshot of that folder. If using OpenCore, also ensure that the two SSDTs are "enabled" in the ACPI section of config.plist.

Perhaps the problem lies on my side. At the bottom of the Catalina 10.15.4 mini-guide there are two ZIP files:
  • Catalina 10.15.4 Fresh Install.zip
  • May 2020 Update - Catalina 10.15.4 Fresh Install.zip
I think for Mojave-to-Catalina upgrade it would best to choose the first file. It should be easy to switch to that ZIP as follows:
  • Download the ZIP
  • Inside the CLOVER folder, rename config-AMD-GPU.plist to config.plist
  • Then enter your Serial Number, Board Serial Number, System UUID, etc. into the SMBIOS section
  • Then copy Board Serial Number into the RtVariables --> MLB field
Mount EFI folder of the USB install disk:
  • Replace CLOVER/kexts/Other folder with new one from the ZIP file
  • Replace CLOVER/ACPI/patched folder with new one from the ZIP file
  • Replace CLOVER/drivers/UEFI folder with new one from the ZIP file
  • Replace config.plist with the new one you modified above
If this works, I'll of course modify the Mojave-to-Catalina upgrade instructions.
