[ROUGH GUIDE] Fix for Finder Preview not working on Mojave 10.14.1+

Thanks, worked for me too. My Finder previews and Preview app are working now. The machine may have the ability to render this in hardware, if anyone finds the cure let us know... Until then: thanks again.

I remember using this fix to solve this issue when I first upgraded to Mojave. I since have built a new machine, and the problem is not that the previews do not work, but that they are painfully slow to start. I'm talking about in the finder whilst browsing files, not the full-screen preview when you hit the spacebar, which I rarely use. Images as well as eps files and all video formats. Once the first file has been previewed in the finder, the rest preview fairly quickly. It's a 5400rmp HDD, and the rest of my system is pretty fast, so I feel like I should not be waiting 5 seconds to view a 20mb png.

Thank you, yes I have, and I found exactly what I have to erase, however, when I try to save the .plist file, I get an error telling me that I can not make changes to that file. I get this message.

"You do not have sufficient privileges to perform this operation (macOS error code: -5000)."

There is where I'm stuck, My user is this mac administrator, I don't know why I get this.

To make matters worse, I found another thing:

My Board ID is this:
Mac-BE088AF8C5EB4FA2

My code lines are these:

<key>Mac-BE088AF8C5EB4FA2</key>
<dict>
<key>jpeg</key>
<true/>
</dict>

And here I have 2 issues, the first one is that it is missing a line (which I think it may be relevant)

<key>forceOfflineRenderer</key>

And the second, When I want to save the Info.plist file, the OS tells me that I am not able to modify such file. I get this error message:

"You do not have sufficient privileges to perform this operation (macOS error code: -5000)."

What do you think I'm doing wrong? What am I not seeing?

Thanks a lot.

PS, there are a copy of my Info.Plist file located at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleVPA.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.plist
and the copy of my Config.Plist from my EFI/CLOVER

Hi, all, I'm still stuck at this, I've been researching on this with no luck, any ideas will be welcome!

Thanks!

In your bios set dvmt pre alloc to 128mb, enable PCIe graphics and onboard graphics.

Hi, thanks I went to my BIOS settings again and again and I could not find such settings.

If you would like a quick fix, your BIOS is confusing and you do not require a lot of Rendering performance in certain big apps, then search for NoVPAJpeg.kext by Vulgo and put that in EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other. When you reboot you will have working Preview and QuickLook until you can understand the process better.

You can also use the shikigva commands during boot instead if you have the latest Lilu and Whatevergreen kexts installed. @vulgo has left all the details for others to find here :thumbup:

Thank you so much!!!!!! After months of searching for a solution I have finally fixed it thanks to your message. However, What do you think I'm missing that I am not understanding in the full process? My main problem is that I am not able to modify the config.plist file due to a lack of administrator privileges.

Other question, sometimes I use final cut to make some videos, will the performance be affected with this the NoVPAJpeg.kext ?

Thanks again,

Glad you are making progress :thumbup:

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest you were unable to understand, only that it's just a matter of reading-up on the successes others have had before us. Many people will tell you the NoVPAJpeg kext is not good because it renders JPG files in software rather than hardware, so misses-out on a lot of the available power in the iGPU. This is true but as you found, getting the iGPU working in what they call "headless" mode is sometimes not so straight-forward with sections of a BIOS becoming invisible unless you activate a certain setting or two. What you need to change is basically not there.

Yes, rendering videos in Final Cut might be affected by this workaround because it uses software rendering for some file-types. Once you get the time, read-up on how to activate your iGPU as headless. As @Big-W said in post #66 you need to find the settings to change the memory allocated to the iGPU. They are there, just buried right now. :thumbup:

If you can mount your EFI partition to access the config.plist there should be no reason you have a privileges problems. While it is mounted check it with Disk Util, First Aid etc.

:)

Hey guys, I have solved the Jpeg preview issues with NoVPAJpeg.kext by Vulgo. But I don't have any thumbnail preview AT ALL from any other kinds of files like .Ai, .EPS, .PSD, .PNG, . PDF, etc..., that really suck, I'm not able to work at all.

Does the best way to solve this ?

1- fix onboard GPU (I wasn't able to fix HD530, skylake 1i7-6700k)?
2- change Smbios profile to macpro 6.1 (I use iMac 18.3) ?
3- Find a way to add 'other files' option to the NoVAPjpeg.kext ? (I've contacted Vulgo for that, but no reply)
4- change the framework as show by Averette rought guide to fix preview (I've tried but got errors)

Does any of you have this issue ?

Perhaps, you could use Artview https://www.code-line.com/artview/ it works great here...
