Hello, i am really new in this world
Can you please advice, can this be done with some cheap CPU on same board? (for future update)

Yes it can be done with any Coffee Lake or Coffee Lake Refresh CPU. This includes:
  • Core i3, i5, i7, i9 --> 8xxx series (Coffee Lake)
  • Core i3, i5, i7, i9 --> 9xxx series (Coffee Lake Refresh)

Same issues for me. The system does lock up, it’s not just a USB or screen refresh issue. If you turn your monitors off and then on after it happens you just get back screens, and you can’t screen share in or anything like that. strange though, audio continues to play When things lock up. after much searching and much frustration I’m thinking it’s a graphics issue. Doesn’t seem like updated drivers are in the new .4 beta yet.

I’m guessing things won’t improve and that the 5700 is the issue. Seems like the navi stuff is total crap on mac at the moment. Poor performance and really buggy, on hacks egpu setups and macs alike.
It would seem you're seeing the exact same thing I am. I can attest to the problem still existing in 10.15.4 beta 1. Who knows when or if they will push out a driver update that fixes the issues. I didn't realize users of eGPUs were experiencing problems with these cards too.

We see from @zzmadd's original post that replacing the RX 5700 XT with an RX 570 prevents the crash. So your motherboard, CPU, and memory are most likely not the issue.

Yeah, I too suspect that it's related to the video card and unfortunately, I have only my old Nvidia 1080 which I got the RX 5700 XT due to the Nvidia not working beyond High Sierra. I'm hesitant to downgrade back to a RX 5700 as I do occasionally use this system to game in windows, and the XT is at least on par with my old 1080 for the most part, and I think the RX 5700 would fall short.

I have read in here that the Radeon VII supposedly works well, and without issues on Catalina. I've literally only got a couple of days left that I can return this RX 5700 XT and get my money back, and if I'm going to change it out, I'd prefer something that can still at least keep up with my 1080. This is all very reminiscent of when I tried a Vega 64 about a year ago. Had random crashes with that too. I don't know what it is about AMD cards, but I never have had these issues with Nvidia hardware. It's just sad there is zero support for them anymore.

What are your thoughts on the Radeon VII? The XFX AMD Radeon VII isn't that much more on top of what this RX 5700 XT cost. I just don't want to swap it out only to encounter problems with that card too, but at this point, I'm thinking the best thing to do is just get a different card.

What I don't want to do, is continue to be plagued with an unreliable system for potentially months or longer, waiting for Apple to hopefully release a driver that fixes the issue. It would be a good idea to remove the RX 5700 XT and enable the IGPU to drive your monitor. If there are no more crashes, then you can safely blame the RX 5700 XT. To use the IGPU, we just need to modify the framebuffer settings.

If this is something you'd like to try, I can modify your config.plist if you post it here (with serial numbers removed).

If you can borrow an alternative non 5700-series GPU, please try that. You may also try:
  • Physically removing the RX 5700 XT.
  • Enabling IGPU in BIOS (if you're using OpenCore, please check whether system will boot).
  • Setting Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007.
  • Connecting your monitor to one of the two Thunderbolt/USB-C ports on the rear IO panel via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
  • You can also connect via HDMI, but that will require adding frame buffer patches. This is easy to do in Clover, but a bit more painful in OpenCore. Using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable is the most convenient option.
This will further confirm whether your main components are okay, and will pinpoint the RX 5700 XT as the cause of the nightmare.
Thanks! I’m going to try and swap mine out with a old 580 or something if it starts freezing again with 10.15.4 beta and the photos library deleted. Since some people have no issues with their 5700 cards, it could be a brand issue as you suggest. Mine is a Gigabyte. @CMMChris also had a gigabyte 5700 xt and seems to have abandoned his, and he seems like a super duper expert with hack graphics stuff. My other guess is the number of monitors I’m using, which is 3, based on what I’ve read on various egpu and Mac forums with people experiencing the same issues.

You already checked a jumper on your board, if it is not set for GAME, I had serious freezing problems with boards because Shaphire came from the factory with a jumper on Gamer. Look this...

Interesting. I don’t think my card has a jumper or switch. I looked when I first got it, but I’ll look again to make sure.

I didn't notice it in mine either, but almost all have this jumper, it's very small and subtle ... look very carefully.

Going to check it out! I also wonder if mine has its latest BIOS. I don’t have a windows machine to check, but I might try and see somehow if I can check or update it to the latest bios for card.

These freezes are almost always related to the video card. So remove your card and look out of the box. If it has a jumper, invert its position and test to see if the freezes will stop. That's exactly what happened to me, after more than 2 months, trying all the solutions and nothing worked, it was the damn Gamer mode that made the MAC crash.
