[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

...
Congratulations on the successful build and thanks for the incredibly detailed guide on the build. I am in the process of installing Mac OSX 10.14.6 on my build. Hardware build complete but i have hit a wall on installing Mojave. My components are: Designare Z390, i9 9900KF, Sapphire Pulse RX 580, G. Skill Rip Jaws 3600 Mhz DDR4 16gb x 4 memory and Samsung 970 Evo NVMe SSD.
Hello @sb098

Some comments and questions:
  • Which version of BIOS is installed? F6, F7, or F8?
  • Do you have the Samsung 970 EVO or EVO Plus?
  • If all four DIMMs are installed, try removing two of them, but consult the Gigabyte owner's manual to determine optimum slots to use for 2 DIMMs.
Also, please note that the build guide should not be quoted in its entirely. We like to ensure that only one copy of the guide is posted. Would you please edit your post and remove the build guide?

Hey Casey,
  • I am on the F8 version of the BIOS. I updated the BIOS version before getting started with the install
  • I have the Samsung 970 EVO Plus
  • Yes, all four DIMM slots are populated with the exact same memory cards. I will try removing two of the DIMMs and give it go and report the result here. I believe the gigabyte manual recommends using DIMM slot 1 and 3. On a side note, the BIOS seems to recognize all the memory cards, not too sure if that's the problem. But will try your suggestion.
PS: I've updated my earlier post and deleted the build guide.

Sorry for this very useless comment of mine, but I have to share my happiness.
I bought a XFX Vega VII today. Plugged in and worked without changing anything. Great.

Over Christmas I will change to OC, update to Catalina and upgrade my water-cooling. Unfortunately Christmas is the only time in the year where I have time for hacking. The rest of the year me and my hacks have to work and that's what they do.

Thanks for un-quoting the build guide!

Regarding the 970 EVO Plus, is it running the latest firmware? Please see NOTE 5a from Post #1:

Oh! Nope. I did not update the firmware on for the SSD. I will try that too and report back.

I am wondering if there's is something different i need to do in config.plist since i am using the i9 9900KF that does not have integrated graphics?

In that case we do not need to specify WhateverGreen parameters in Devices --> Properties. I believe it's still possible to use iMac19,1 although some users prefer iMacPro1,1 when iGPU is disabled. If SideCar in Catalina might be of interest down the road, iMac19,1 should be used.

Feel free to post the config.plist from EFI partition of your USB install disk.

Hi two questions if someone could help. Which port on the Dsignare gets the Fenvi bluetooth
and 2) doesn't sidecar require the IGPU which the i9KF doesn't have?

WOW! The guide is perfect! Thanks @CaseySJ I just did it. Catalina is running smooth now
(After trying 3x to install Mojave without success)

Now everything is working: Sleep, Shut down, Airdrop even SIDECAR**...
Everything BUT my USB-C port and the RED USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A)

Any Idea of a fix to this problem?

**Sidecar is working with some glitches and quality drop (pixelated image)... I didn't dive into it yet, but I'll try to test more config options to figure out whats wrong but anyways the hack indentifies the ipad and is able to connect.

MB: Z390 M GAMING (rev. 1.0)

I'll post my conifg.plist here, just in case.

  • Regarding item 1, please see this post from yesterday.
  • Regarding item 2, you are correct. SideCar requires hardware support for HEVC (H.265). On Macs with T2 chip, this is provided by the T2 chip. On Macs without T2, SideCar uses Intel QuickSync, which is provided by the iGPU.

Hello @danstsx

USB ports are defined by SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V7.aml that is copied in to CLOVER/ACPI/patched. If you copied this file to your Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming system, it will not define the correct ports. The USB SSDT would have to be customized for the actual ports that exist on your board. Fortunately there are two easy-to-follow guides for doing this:
The procedure is quite simple even if it takes many paragraphs to explain... If you get stuck, follow a subset of the above procedure that explains how to list all the USB 2, USB 3, and USB Type C ports. If you can create that list, I can modify the USB SSDT very quickly.
