Asus X299 - Support

I also haven’t needed Windows at all since 2011- so haven’t installed it. I’ve heard that having a Windows 10 dual boot is a nightmare because their constant updates tend to brick the Clover boot loader. Looking into hardware power switches I can mount to a drive bay in the front of my case as well. Am I on the right track with that thinking?

Yeah dual boot is a real nightmare so for the moment I boot and choose my startup NVme SSD with the F8 key ...

I am not on audio or video project in my work activity but when I see your workstation I tell myself it's time that I face a great clean on mine...

Edit : RX 580 is working well on Catalina and on Mojave but I did not perform the latest supplemental update

Nice! Those monitors are VESA mounted on a dual arm. I’m debating building wings for that desk for the Yamaha HS8s. That autonomous motorized desk has been amazing for when I need to stretch and get stuff done.

In my current setup I’m not using any mechanical drives. Just the PCIE in the MacBook Pro and some external EVOs in enclosures. I get your point about SSDs- that’s why I’m sticking with those in the new machine. But NVME at this point would be more a luxury than requirement. I’ll upgrade my EVO SSDs to NVME at some point, but my goal is to get the system up and running first.

Also, I’m the same about the internal audio. I also never use it, but just want to know that the option exists if for some ungodly reason I need to use it lol.

I can't imagine to have main monitor different than mounted on my wall behind, I use this kind of solution good few years,
and that's true, that is 200% better comfort of work.
My woman don't support power of my Edifiers alone so I can't imagine what it could be with Yamaha HS8s :D
(choice of "her or lovely sound" )

About SSDs - that true we have to be realist - whole config it's a big price so, it's not so easy to get everything
immediately, I've done same thing as you - first buy working "base cfg" and then add what I want/need etc,
on the same time, that's why I mentioned about Sabrend Rocket nvme because with same performance as 970 evo - we can buy 1Tb with a half of price... of course it can be good info for later... after 1st months of your build :)

BTW: It's not related to our X299 platform yet, but sometimes people have more than one config, so
if someone was thinking about Gen4 SSDs - I can say - it's definitely not worth yet: we don't care about power consumption, but at this moment there is small difference in performance and huge problem of heating etc..

My "studio" as it were needs a lot of work. Behind the desk (off camera) is a small table with a Pioneer DJ controller. This room is in desperate need of carpet and acoustic panels (I only bought this house in May- and as a single guy in a larger house, it's a lot to take on). Thank you for being inspired by what you saw lol.

Glad the RX 580 is working for you, which card did you go with?

I'm capitalizing on being single and not having to make those considerations as of yet!

In regards to your note about Gen4 SSDs, I completely agree with you. I even had a friend who's telling me to wait until the next Radeon update to buy a card, but what he hasn't considered is that under no way can I even consider Catalina until those 32 bit apps get updated, and even then- I gotta be careful as I have a bunch of hardware that may not play well with Catalina as is. I think I'll be stuck on Mojave, so this build is going to have to be configured to be a flagship for YEARS. (For the love of God I'm stuck on Sierra on my main machine, Serato DJ doesn't play well with my DJ controller on anything higher)- and seeing as I'm using this Macbook Pro for both DJing and work, it's limited me definitely.

I bought a RX 580 SAPPHIRE NITRO + SE 8 Go on Amazon two years ago: no problem and silent.

I think people make 1st mistake which worth 2 seconds of click on F8
Instead of boot Windows from Clover it takes 2 seconds or less to boot windows from F8 (in ASUS bios case - BIOS boot choose list...) - with that little change ALL your problems gone in 2 sec. so
today still I don't understand why people still talk about that if we have so simple solution
(maybe I missed something, but I don't think so... it couldn't be more simple .... ) :)

BTW: I have a similar situation as you @djbuddha - I don't need Windows.
I have to use it sometimes for some test for my clients etc... in my work it normal,
but for my private usage -> Windows = :banghead:

Ah.. and I forgot to mention - In my opinion first thing to do on Windows it's - services.msc
and turn off Windows update service :p (of course it change on some situations)
For my family and very close friends it's first thing what I do... these Updates worth nothing
(without talking about some exceptions / details... )
Of course for professional usage for all client I have to use Windows updates, but for
private usage it's waste of time... yes I earn money with next PC with WinUpdate bug etc,
but after a years of this kind of problems, believe me if you have one of latest updates, and
normally you use OS X - you don't need more than todays state of your Windows.
I don't want to go on details and exceptions but in most cases - it's a reality.

I used Pioneer 2-3 years SB2 then SB3, between us I was :banghead: when I saw everywhere Rekordbox instead Serato which I
liked very much :) (It's only my personal opinion, even if for a lot of people it's not a big difference) :p
After quite bigger while I started to learn how to create music with my Novation Impulse Keyboard,
but after time .... with too much off everyday-work I finished on learning plaing piano only, of course it can be useful for future, today it's not so easy, but I hope next year I will be able to back to my little pleasure of music creation... :)

So from what I've looked up, as soon as Windows forces updates (I don't think services.msc disables all the updates entirely from what I've heard around) it destroys the boot loader. So to combat this, I'm thinking of having a SATA power switch for my MacOS install so I'll just hard power off that drive when I need Windows for any reason. I wish there was a simpler way. I thought that F8 would be the solution, but I'm hearing everywhere that the F8 solution may not work in most cases.

Sadly I'm so comfortable with my Serato workflow. I won't use Serato Pro (again ... if old Serato DJ works with my controller, why upgrade). I DJ for a local radio station and do live to air broadcasts almost weekly plus 2 mix shows a week, so experimenting with what I use in terms of DJ'ing can't be an option sadly. I do hear that Rekordbox is great these days.

Plus I use it during my day job (mainly for getting BPMs). So I might as well disclose, I do video editing for a licensed music video DJ pool in Canada. Nothing says good times like massive 15 GB 4K files for 4 minutes exports...... clean/ dirty / including DJ intro / outro edits when applicable.

This should give some insight into why I need this machine.

Looks like that's the card I'm debating to start this build until I do the upgrade. Thanks for letting me know!!

They have?

I updated to the latest Clover in preparation for the 10.15 update. I can't say I noticed anything different. Update was very straightforward (I didn't use their installer though, I extracted the files from the installer)

Yeah, it's different now. Try running the installer to a new EFI partition on a USB stick and you'll see the new structure. They are trying to match how OC structure is. I don't think it functionally makes a difference at all anyway.

Any surprises while updating?

None at all, perfect update. Screen does go black for a little bit then reboots, as has been the usual case lately.

Also, @izo1 - did the Sage 10G completely solve your audio issue with your Radeon VII? I don’t think this is even going to matter to me as I’m running the Scarlett interface, but it’d be nice to know that in a pinch I still have access to on-board audio. (When I eventually upgrade my GPU of course). While I have everyone’s attention, is the RX 580 actually working on the final Mojave build?

Yeah, it fixed all my problems with DisplayPort audio and Radeon VII.

Radeon VII is on sale at NewEgg if you're in the states for $569.

I wouldn't get the RX580 on a iMac Pro 1,1 SMBIOS (X299 platform). At a minimum get a Vega 56/64/Radeon VII.

I don't know about Navi and iMac Pro 1,1, but it looks like its supported in 10.15.1

To get up and running I’ll probably grab a used Sapphire Nitro RX580 (friend of mine has one laying around he’ll part with for under $50 CAD) until I get the funds to do some other upgrades at the same time (NVME etc)

Unfortunately for some of my workflow, Catalina isn’t an option as some of these apps (that don’t have replacements) aren’t 64 bit yet (and may never be to be honest).
