[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I think we saw already someone connecting it to the Alpine Ridge and getting correct 933 clocks and full 5k resolution? Or am I getting confused?
You may be right -- I think joevt provided a link to a hardware forum in which such a card was plugged into an outboard PCIe chassis connected via TB. It would be nice to have first-hand confirmation so I can reliably add this to the build guide.

I think I'm going to do it! I will order the parts from Amazon.es and then also buy the new LG from Apple. Worst case scenario it doesn't work and I can return everything back.

Sounds good -- keep us informed! Just be aware of the 4 extra cables with the Add-In-Card.
  • THB_C cable to Gigabyte AORUS Pro motherboard.
  • Internal USB cable to F_USB header on motherboard.
    • Fortunately, the AORUS Pro WiFi has 2 internal USB 2.0 headers.
  • Two 6-pin power cables from the power supply.

Thanks a lot @CaseySJ!

- THB_C Cable looks like it comes with add-on card
- Internal USB cable to F_USB... what is this? sorry I'm a bit lost

On the Designare Z390, however, we have a built-in Titan Ridge controller and we cannot install an Alpine Ridge card for connecting to external Thunderbolt-PCIe devices. We can, however, install the Alpine Ridge for connecting to Thunderbolt-DisplayPort devices.

Just to be sure, does it actually mean we can add a Thunderbolt Alpine Ridge card like GC-Alpine Ridge to Designare Z390 without using the Thunderbolt header to connect the Ultrafine 5K using two DisplayPort inputs? Of course only for image, no brightness control, usb and so on

I actually saw at least two product reviews that this method worked for Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Ultrafine 5K (not sure about full 5K)

- I noticed it comes with 2x4 Pin CPU + 1x4 Pin CPU, however I guess you don't need the later if you are not going to do overclock? (just like on the Designare)
The owner's manual suggests that it comes with the cables shown below, which do not include two 6-pin power cables. We believe that the USB connection is needed for sleep/wake capability, but we can try with and without that connection.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the Designare Z390 does not require any of these cables and we save ourselves one internal PCIe slot! So there are certainly some advantages and disadvantages.

Yes that seems to be correct. But I would like to see confirmation that two DP-In connections will send two DP streams to the LG 5K for a true 5K picture.

Hi,

Same here!

Installed only in de EFI partition.

1.06 is working
1.07 is not!

Is my older version of Clover the issue? I have 4934.

I also updated CLOVER, to be sure , but still having the same problem, can't figure out whats wrong with VirtualSMC 1.07 in my hack

A quick checklist for updating to VirtualSMC 1.0.7:
  • Replace the VritualSMC kext and sensor kexts.
    • If replacing them in /Library/Extensions folder, run Kext Utility to rebuild kernel cache (required).
    • If replacing them only in CLOVER/kexts/Other, no need to rebuild kernel cache.
  • Replace VirtualSmc.efi in the drivers64UEFI folder (for Clover 4xxx) or drivers/UEFI folder (for Clover 5xxx).
Remember that VirtualSMC consists of:
  • Kexts
  • EFI driver

Oh sorry I didn’t tell but I ordered the Alpine Ridge because Titan is out of stock and I wanted all to arrive on Tue

If I’m understanding I’m missing that USB header. Maybe it comes a similar cable with the motherboard? Otherwise do you know which cable should I order?
