Nvidia Drivers for Mojave 10.14 Not Available, no WorkAround works well

  • Fixes boot to black screen on AMD and NVIDIA
  • Fixes sleep wake to black screen on AMD
May be I'm lucky, I had no such issues. So it may work for your setup without the WhateverGreen.kext, worth testing, less kexts is cleaner.

Correction :)
I had a "boot to black screen on AMD" problem initially. Started digging, and being an IT engineer, tried to solve it by removing, not adding stuff. This led me to discovery that the problem disappears after removing 'CsmVideoDxe-64.efi'. The rest is history :)

WhateverGreen also got AirPlay working for me which isn't listed on the Github page.

Got that too, without WhateverGreen. Never been able to have it on High Sierra with GTX960.

Well, if everything works for you, don't use it.

I'm not exactly enthusiastic about the prospect of spending ~$240 (or ~$180 used) for an RX 580 that's roughly the same performance as my 1060, but with more heat and power consumption. Vega's out of my price range, and the cards tend to have 4 ports instead of 5.

For now, I have no pressing need to upgrade to Mojave (especially with an open data loss bug for certain Core Data apps). Once Xcode 10 starts requiring Mojave mid-cycle, that may force my hand, but for now I'm just going to stay put and not immediately upgrade for the first time ever ^^;

People's impatience and talking about switching to inferior GPUs even

Nothing's more inferior than "the sh*t doesn't even work".

It's pure nuts to play this driver waiting/praying game for every single Mac OS update, and this one sets the new sad height.

I am just curious, in what way are AMD cards inferior? I got an RX580 to replace my 1050 ti.

I will agree that in Windows + Adobe Premiere Pro, the Nvidia was being used more than the Radeon (I tested them out), but the export speeds (with color grading) and playback were about the same.

In macOS under Metal though, that’s a whole different story. The RX580 performs better than the 1050 ti, under Premiere Pro again.

Maybe the “inferior” part has to do with gaming in Windows? (I wouldn’t know, that’s why I ask).

For me, I was alway attracted to the lower TDP of the Nvidia cards. I hadn't used any AMD/ATI cards in a long time and back when I did, those cards ran HOT. VERY, VERY HOT!! All that heat caused premature failures for me.

However, with my current Vega 56, after replacing the stock thermal compound with liquid metal and doing a little tweaking, the heat has been very manageable. I am now able to keep the fan speeds low enough that I can't tell the difference audibly between when my system is asleep or awake when doing simple things like surfing or watching some YouTube. I have been extremely impressed with how well this Vega 56 has been running.

If I understand correctly there are stuff in Adobe that's either CUDA or pure software, w/o Open*L equivalent. Am I right on that?

But this whole thing is funny. There are 2 areas that I consider worth "competing": video-editing and gaming.

On video editing it really comes down to whatever API the video editing software supports, like FCPX is clearly more optimized for A and Adobe seems more like on N (still?), meaning saying "X is better than Y" is completely naive in my opinion.

On the gaming side...you're nuts if you're a serious gamer and still on Mac to start with. The chance is either you're not a gamer or running games that aren't that super-demanding (maybe the whole eGPU thing would change that later but certainly not right now). So I'm not sure what's the point of bragging on that either (unless you dual-boot to Windows whenever you game).

I am just sharing my experience with both cards, and I am confirming that both Nvidia and AMD are capable of video editing in Premiere Pro, and that it shouldn’t deter people from switching if they wish to.

I don’t know what you mean by bragging. No I don’t game on either OSs. I have Windows for my tutorials and as a backup OS for my video editing, should an issue arise with the macOS, as with Hackintosh, you never know.

I was merely asking for other people’s experiences with the 2 GPU companies, as I said I don’t game and I am curious to know what people meant by “inferior”.
