Thank you for sharing your opinion with me.
This is very interesting.

"Below 3.0ghz processors have performance issue for modern software."
Can you write me an exact example for this issue?

If i coding i need multitasking. I play music, browsing many-many page and use photoshop, IDE, automatic FTP backup and i plan to use: veracrypt.

Then i3 8100 is suitable for you.

FYI, I have two machines with i5-2.5ghz & i3 3.6 ghz. Both used for hardcore coding and casual Photoshop work, where i3's performance is far better than i5. Now the choice is yours.

If you have turbo boost enabled the i5-8400 goes up to 4.0 GHz.

Intel Core i5-8400 Coffee Lake 6-Core 2.8 GHz (4.0 GHz Turbo)

The two extra cores/threads also help with performance in certain scenarios, when using heavily multi-threaded applications.
The i3 may perform better in terms of single core performance. That is not the whole story though.

Dear trs96!
What do you think? Which is better for work (in multitasking: programming, web browsing, photoshop, etc.)?
Now i don't want to buy any dedicated GPU.

Either one is good for those purposes. If you can spend extra for the i5-8400 that is the best you can do for overall performance.

Thank you.
I need just a good motherboard to choose now.

I appreciate @trs96' s explanation. But as you ask for example so here it goes.

My Original mac mini's config: Core i5 (4th gen) 2.5 ghz , HD Graphics 4000, 16gb ddr3 ram & 500gb hdd

I usually do multitasking with Xcode 9, Xcode simulator, firefox, skype, photoshop, mail and the performance is poor. I dare not to open other applications like itunes, photos or numbers as the machine periodically hangs if I use them.

Now, my Hakintosh's config: Core i3(6th gen) 3.7 ghz, HD Graphics 530, 8gb ddr4 ram, 500gb hdd

Here I ran the same applications & the performance is much better. I don't hesitate to open other applications also.

ok, I shall. that tome is very detailed but I am also trying to come to terms with [pun unintended] the various technical terms and jargon used in that article. once I work that out then I think things would be hopefully easier to navigate.

EDIT (29/4/2018)
@ELayeR , SUCCESS!!

followed @RehabMan 's guide to the letter and finished the "Preparation for Port Discovery" instruction set, rebooted and before proceeding to the next section, I thought I would just trial plug my USB 3 external drive (seagate 9SCAN4-500, USB3 powered external drive, purchased 2012, quite an oldy but a goody) into a random USB 3 port and hurrah!!! worked like a dream. THANK YOU @RehabMan.

so I have stopped there and haven't proceeded with the more complicated instructions to follow.

now... the last hurdle is the iTunes video not playing part...

For your iTunes video problem try putting the Lilu and Shiki kexts in the EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other directory of your EFI partition.

:)

... and also the on-chip cache matters too .

As far as I can tell the i3-8100 has 6MB while the i5-8400 has 9MB. I'm not sure how the CPU shares that out given the different number of cores, but one of the deciding factors, especially with the i3 series, has always been cache size. For example the i3 71** series had 3MB while the i3-73** had 4MB. Doesn't sound like much but it made a big difference in performance between the two.

:)

I tried that no joy :(

Ah, sorry to hear that.

Okay, so re-reading your 2nd post you said iTunes wouldn't play purchased videos. So does that mean all others are playing alright?

If so then do you just get a black screen, or something else?

The reason I say this is because, as you probably know, DRM-protected videos need help to play in iTunes with certain hardware configurations. When I had a GTX1050 I experienced the black screen and no video. The Lilu and Shiki kexts solved the problem. That's one of the things Shiki is designed to do etc.

Are you connected to your monitor by HDMI cable?
