You could clone to another drive. Reformat you NVMe drive back to HFS+ and clone back again?
Carbon copy cloner supports this.

I do have a backup copy of my NVME drive on a SSD using CCC. The SSD is also APFS. I guess I could try this
Are you saying that CCC can make a backup from apfs to HFS+ without any issues ?
