tonymacx86's Skylake Thunderbolt 3 Test Build: GA-Z170X-UD5-TH - i5-6600K

Not open for further replies.
hello. i had my skylake Ga-Z170x-UD5 TH, 6700K, 64GB, HD530 working nicely. (El Capitan)
then i upgraded (or tried) to Sierra. bad move. i go thru the boot from USB, and then boot from the laid-down installer.
but now when i boot the installed macos Sierra, the progress bar gets maybe 2/3rds across and shuts down - screen goes black.

any ideas? its a LG 4K screen, whereas the initial install was done using an older 1920x1200 screen.

DeLock 89153 FW card works fine, but needs an extra powerconnector. Startech TB3-1/2 -> TB-FW adapter didn't work properly on my Metric Halo interface. The DeLock is fine, my older Startech FW card would make my rig reboot on shutdown.

Much to my surprise and delight, my beloved Metric Halo ULN-8 now works with my Startech TB3-1/2 coupled to the same Apple TB-FW adapter I tried before. Great.
Don't understand why it didn't work before, though. Will keep testing.

It gets even better: I can switch on my ULN-8 whenever I like, as long as the Apple TB-FW dongle is connected on boot...
Nice.

I followed this guide. After the clean install USB ports were working properly. I did a migration from another hackintosh and that seems to have broken them. The USB 2 devices only work in USB 3 ports and USB 3 devices don't work at all.

Any idea what I did?

Here's a good overview of Thunderbolt 3 on Gigabyte mobos. They've released a BIOS update for the GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-Gaming G1, GA-Z170X-Gaming GT, and GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 so that their USB-C ports function as Thunderbolt 3.

Very interesting. Thanks for all the hard work :)

I'm now hoping Gigabyte extend the Thunderbolt roll-out to the Z170MX Gaming 5, MATX version of the boards listed (for completely selfish reasons). Their web-site seems to imply that the Thunderbolt implementation is related to their intel USB3.1 ports, and it uses the same chipset setup.

I noticed that IORegistryExplorer doesn't "see" the USB3.1 ports as being on the XHC node, as it does all the other USB ports, but rather on the RP01 pci-bridge, which sounds logical for a high-speed and potential Thunderbolt port ...

Hi Tony, I have just built a hackintosh a few weeks ago with the same same core parts, and overall works great! I have only had one issue, where when booting to my OS X partition I quickly get the "Prohibited" sign and I have to manually reboot. The issue does not happen every time, seems to be at random. Verbose mode shows an "OsxAptioFixDrv:" issue. I have tried to implement solutions from the forums but with no success. Please help!
This is a Clover bug with no definitive fix. Same thing happens with my machine; I've tried the various patched AptioFixDrv alternatives and still only get a successful boot about 30% of the time. Apparently installing Clover in legacy mode can help but I haven't tried it myself.

** See issues I had to workaround at bottom of post.

Here’s my build, it’s nearly identical to this primary post:
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...3-test-build-ga-z170x-ud5-th-i5-6600k.199242/
- Gigabyte Z170X-UDH TH
- Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151
- CORSAIR Hydro Series H55 Liquid CPU Cooler
- CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300)
- Crucial 2.5" 960GB SATA III SSD
- CORSAIR HXi Series HX750i 750W 80 PLUS PLATINUM Power Supply
- ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB Video Card Pulled from a MacPro
- EVGA GeForce GTX 950 2GB (Using this for Windows 10 boot)
- TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Wireless PCI Express Adapter
- IOGEAR GBU521 USB Bluetooth 4.0 Micro Adapter
- Corsair Carbide Series 400R Mid Tower Case
- StarTech Thunderbolt3 to Thunderbolt adapter

- Last week: parts arrived, completed build then Installed Windows 10 Pro on a separate drive to verify all components worked properly.
- Followed Tony’s post to the letter for BIOS, Thunderbolt, firmware updates and settings.
- Installed el capitan using Unibeast and Multibeast, again following Tony’s post exactly to get el capitan installed and fully working!

macOS Sierra upgrade:
After searching thru many of the posts, here’s what worked for me:
1. Download latest version of clover:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/cloverefiboot/?source=typ_redirect
2. Download EFI Mounter v3: you can find the link on this site
3. Mount the EFI partition using EFI Mounter, then run the Clover_v2.3k_r3763 package on the boot drive.
4. Restart and you will notice the Clover BootLoader looks different, go to about to check the clover version.
5. Boot back into el capitan
6. Mount EFI Partition with EFI Mounter again, then copy all the files in this directory “/Library/Extensions” to /Voulmes/EFI/EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other
7. Restart
8. Download and run the macOS Sierra Installer

** AUDIO -- Now working thanks to today's sierra multibeast release, woo-hoo!
loaded Realtec ACL1150

** USB -- My USB 3 ports "still" do not work, even with sierra multibeast release, tried all combinations of the 3 USB options available, the Standard USB Ports work fine though.

** FORBIDDEN ICON -- When restarting I frequently get the Forbidden Icon, to get past that I immediately hold down the SHIFT KEY until the progress bar appears, then I release it and it boots normally, this does not invoke Safe Boot. Not sure why it works, but it does. MULTIBEAST and included Updated Clover fixed this!!

** WINDOWS 10 -- Had Issues with Windows 10 freezing--- it would allow me to select windows from clover boot loader, login and then after about 30 seconds of uptime, it would freeze. Fixed this by changing the default boot drive in BIOS to the Windows 10 drive. But now to boot back into Mac OS Sierra I have to press F12 at Bios and select the first UEFI partition which then takes me to the Clover Boot Loader.

Since you have the GBU521 would you be so kind to tell me if this will allow my Hackintosh to 'Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your mac'?

Thanks!

Haven't delved that deep into it with my Apple Watch yet...

everything works fine, thx Tony ! Stardock TB3/TB Adapter works with Universal Audio UAD Apollo Interface without problems. No Windows install, only Peripherals > Intel(R) Thunderbolt > Security Level - [Legacy Mode] .

regards from Germany :)
