About This Build:
This entire system was generously donated to me by leftbrain so I could work on trying to get it optimized. Check out this thread for details and updates on my progress with the build.

It has a few updated components that Gigabyte is using in all of their new revs. ALC892 Audio functions normally with ALC8xxHDA. :D The Realtek 8111E Ethernet chip requires Lnx2Mac's RealtekRTL81xx.kext available here:

Comments:
Working 100% in 32/64 bit mode. It's a Mini-ITX sized board (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-ITX). The size is awesome- never had a tiny computer before- it's about the size of a shoebox. :D

SWEET HACKMINI

So after beating my head bloody against this project for a few days I gave up and took a break. This weekend I had a look again and realized two very important and stupid-of-me-not-to-notice-earlier things:

1. I had the 65W chassi, not the 150W. I'm having big doubts that this would suffice for this machine. Using the nvidia 210 while installing from DVD caused reboots.
2. My GPU was broken. Even BIOS looked weird and I confirmed it with a second machine as well.

So I've moved from the small cool Antec ISK 300 to a normal midi-tower kind of Antec. I'm also in the process of ordering a new GPU. It'll be another Asus EN210 since they're cheap and should work just fine for this setup (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index. ... pic=222413). This time I'm going with a fan however, as it only takes up one slot. Once I've got everything up and running I still might get a smaller itx case so this will be a crucial component.

Hopefully I'll have the new GPU before the weekend so that I can take another shot at it by then.

So I finally got the new GPU, same as before but this one works. And so does the hack. I had to install the NIC separately, but apart from that everything is fine. Booted up without any further fixes, auto detected the GPU correctly and QE/CI works right away as does dual monitors on DVI and VGA ports at 1680x1050.

I'm now moving my day-to-day to this machine and will only use my soon 6 year old macbook on the terass. :)

I would like to use the F6a beta BIOS with my H55N-USB3 as it resolves some issues with Sandforce based SSDs. Do I need a DSDT created specifically for F6a (a DSDT is currently only available as high as F5), or will the F5 DSDT suffice? As far as I'm aware the only change made with F6a was the Sandforce related compatibility updates.

I was posting over in the CustoMac thread, but there seems to be much more activity over here so here goes. I have this same system up and running (finally) with 4 Gb memory and an i3-550. Right now I am using a hybrid install of pieces from this install http://bit.ly/g5GvNE and parts from MultiBeast. I haven't been able to do an actual install from the retail DVD yet as I'm missing a power cable for my slim DVD, but I plan to do a fresh install as soon as it arrives. Also I am using a 512 Mb 8400GS as it was the only card I had which will fit the case. So far only a single resolution and no QE/CI. I'm using the ethernet driver from the current MultiBeast, is this not the same one which works in 64 bit mode? I had to set mine to 32 bit mode before it would even work and now it only works for a short period of time before it stops working.

EDIT: I have now completed a fresh install of 10.6.3, updated it to 10.6.7, ran MultiBeast with the UserDSDT option and finally added support for ethernet and sound. Sound works, ethernet says it's working but I cannot connect to other systems on my LAN or the internet. I am also having problems getting decent video, only 1024x768, no QE/CI. I've tried NVenabler and GraphicsEnabler set to Yes. This is a Palit 8400GS with 512 Mb.

EDIT2: Can anyone recommend a working video card for this system which is available in a low profile slim model? Those which require 2 slots do not work with my case, so I would like to find one with the HDMI and DVI port available on the single low profile bracket.

Hi,

Thank you all for good avice and excuse me if I'm asking for something obvious.

I built an almost identical system. Everything works 100% (including sleep and USB 3), with the exception that the fans seem to be running at full speed all the time. This makes the system very noisy and I think I could afford to reduce the fan speed, since the CPU temperature is around 36 C and system temperature 40 C. I have enabled smart fan control in the BIOS and tried FanControl http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23137/fan-control and smcFanControl http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol. Neither worked and smcFanControl did nothing after stating that it has not been tested on my system.

In the install, I used iBoot+Multibest with custom DSDT, 64 bit GraphicsEnabler=yes, Lnx2Mac's RealtekRTL81xx Ethernet, realtek audio kext and USB3 kext.

I hope I have provided enoiugh information for someone smarter than me to spot the problem. Thanks in advance!

hi
Yeh i 've got the following config working (10.6.7 lion) after some wait of HD5570 working drivers :

I've used last iboot and multibeast, and official OSX leopard DVD and OSX combo update to 10.6.7, following tony mac tutorial for iboot/multibeast

Gigabyte H55N-USB3 mini itx
antec isk 310-150
intel core i5 560
kingston hyperX lovo DDR3 2 x 2 GO (PC10600)
noactua NFR8 x 2
noctua NF-P12
prolimatech samuel 17
samsung SN-S083c DVD burner
samsung syncmaster F2380M
logitech wireless combo mk520
sapphire radeon hd5570 1Go PCIE (DVI test only, need to test analog and hdmi later ... GraphicsEnabler=No, else i 've black screen lock at start, but 1920x1080 is ok with acceleration)
Wifi USB key hercules HWNUm-300 (RTL8192SU)

Hardware issues :
1) i need to test USB3
2) i've issue with standby mode (screen blackout when go to standby mode and i cannot return to OS)

Software issue at this time with native OS setup :
Mac os DVD player failed to start ... all others apps work good.

Tested external software :
- sketchup 8 (last release)
- logitech control center + unify module (official support for mouse and keyboard on logitech site)
- Realtek opendrivers for USB key : http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/21473 ... nload.html

Just stick official apple mac on the two side of my hackintosh for fun :) :headbang:

ps : is there a way to map standard mac key to standard PC 105 key ?? or can i use a mac keyboard (black exist ??) ?
Update : i've find the "double command" tools, that i need to test but it not seems to be 100% compliant with why i want to do...

Any ideas on getting sound to work?

Hello,

I have 2 internal disk on SATA 1 and SATA 2. All works fine.
I decided to install a dvd driver (on sata 3). It's detected by motherboard in BIOS but SL don't detect it.
How to solve this one ?
