I wanted to build a computer not out of necessity, but more out of curiosity and wanting to learn how to do it. I had never bought computer parts or built one before. I did a lot of research beforehand, and also wanted to do a budget build. It took me around a month to accumulate all the parts. I only purchased items when I found deals on them, so I didn't pay anywhere near the normal prices in the links above (using various rebates and deal of the day type items from Newegg, Amazon, and Tigerdirect). I currently have a 27" iMac (mid-2010), i3 dual-core. It's still a great computer, and I have 8GB of RAM in it. I do a lot of photo and music stuff on that computer, which I may start transferring some of that to this new Hackintosh (although the screen on my 27" iMac is MUCH nicer than my 27" Samsung).
Updated June 2015
Well, a lot's changed to my original build, but rather than create a new thread, I just updated my old one. I got a new case, Carbide Air 540, which is super easy to work with. With the amount of space, I replaced my Coolermaster Hyper 212 with an EK watercooling kit that I got at Microcenter. Temps are much better but the case is pretty open, so I still do get fan noise.
Also added a newer GPU to replace my ASUS 660Ti. Went with a XFX R9 280X. I got a good deal on it, but more importantly, it had 2 mini-displayport outputs. I needed this to use my iMac 27" in target display mode as a monitor, then also picked up a gently used Apple Cinema Display. Great to have 2 1440p monitors, but unfortunately the height of the two are different so I had to put a book under the ACD to make the heights match. To get the R9 280X to work, I had to reflash the BIOS on the card using my Windows 7 boot to an older BIOS, and it finally was recognized in OS X.
Overclock
Used vanwinkle's simple guide to overclocking an Ivy Bridge processor. Worked with no issues.
http://www.tonymacx86.com/overclock...locking-ivy-bridge-gigabyte-z77-i5-3570k.html
Got mine up to 4.6GHz, set vcore around 1.215V (although shows as 1.175V on the HWMonitor).
Issues
Sleep, which I never got working. Also, in Yosemite, I have a lot of lag in my Aperture (photo editing) program which I can't seem to resolve. Other than that, things work pretty well!
