Samsung SM 951

Hi guys. My old Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 boots from Samsung SM951 without Bios mods/hacks! I have the 256Gb AHCI version installed in a PCIe slot trough Lycom DT120 adapter

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM951-256GB-AHCI-MZHPV256HDGL-00000/dp/B00VELD92U/

The Bios (F9A) of course doesn't show up the M2 disk as a boot drive but Clover does. So I cloned my system on the M2 and installed Clover on another HD visible in the Bios, once Clover starts at bootscreen I can choose to boot from El Capitan on the SM951, no need to add custom entries or so, it boots automatically:thumbup:

Speed isn't as crazy as newer motherboards but I'm very pleased with this SSD on my old X58 motherboard.

Currently have a H87 + 4770 + 256GB Plextor SATA SSD on 10.10.5 Multibeast. Do you think i can get a Lycom + SM951 and boot up from the SM951? Interested as well.

Systems feels solid but could do with an SSD upgrade :)

You have to use Clover as bootloader.
If you start Clover from a drive that your Bios lists as bootable you should be able to choose the SM951 and boot....
BTW My SM951 is the AHCI version, I'm running Mac OS X 10.11.4

This version yes?

I'm thinking to upgrade to a 10.11 on the new drive as well. Just need to see if it will work with a Lycom + SM951 + Clover, seeing that booting from the NVME version seems iffy at this point.

That one should be even faster than mine (I have the 256Gb) so I should say go for it.

Hi guys, I own a SM951 with Skylake and Z170, and I'm having restart/shutdown troubles..Every time I restar it says "your computer restarted because of a problem". I've tried halt enabler, and fix shutdown, but still the same. Here is the log.

Any ideas?!

Yes, this is a known bug of the NVMeGenerec.kext from MinnowStor, which does not occure, if u are using OS X 10.11.3 or lower. Above 10.11.3 the driver produces these kernel-panics even on restart or shutdown of the system. But the coder no longer works on this driver, because it never was planned or coded to be used as boot-drive.

So the community is waiting for someone, who is able to code a NVMe-driver with sourcecode being shared to the community.
Meanwhile we all have to deal with that annoying bug.

SM951/MZ-HPVxxx0 is M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 AHCI. Works as an OS X boot drive natively on motherboards with the required slot (i.e., Maximus VII Impact). NVMeGenerec.kext supports SM951/MZ-VPVxxx0.

SM 951 comes as both NVMe and AHCI versions.

Will my SM951 NVMe works OOB with my MSI Z170 Gaming Pro mobo? Shall I remove the NVMeGeneric.kext from my system?!. If not, is there any problem with this restart/shutdown trouble? I mean, can something be broken for this?
thanks

NVMe is going to cause trouble. The author never intended to use it as a boot drive.

Much better to get the SM951 AHCI.
