this baby is gonna rock, cant wait to get the parts, picking it all up on saturday morning, i live 5 mins from scans sales centre :)

i have to thank 2 people for the ideas into this build BoomR and Gordo74 both you guys have helped me make up my mind to get into this project and have the confidence to drop apple's machines (after 14 years) in favour of building my own. and obviously tonymac for the site!!

Soon as im built and up and running im also throwing some money into the pot of this site, its got a fantastic community, amazing tutorials and quite frankly its saved me a good £1000/£1500

hope my list helps you or anyone else, and if there's something i've missed please let me know :)

LOL... Apologies BoomR... I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to all the tech lingo... IEEE = Firewire... LOL :) You learn something everyday!! My mate who is helping me build the machine knows about all that stuff and he's on holiday at the moment!! ;)

Chris. Thanks for providing that list. Looks like its gonna be a beast. I won't have the money to buy all the kit for a couple of weeks so if you don't mind i might just tag along with you for a while and see how the build goes and then maybe if all goes to plan i will build the same machine as you... if you are cool with that?

Thanks guys

:)

sure thing mate! i'll deffo keep you posted! its the first time i've built a machine, pretty excited to jump in!

Then i can get my logic and ableton on there and rock some new tunes out!!

Chris - This list looks good. I would only change a few minor things.

The motherboard I would change to a UD3 or UD3H, you really dont need the extra features of anything beyond that.

I would also get a separate PCIe Firewire card if you're going to be using firewire. Syba sells one at amazon for around $25.

Your parts list looks SPOT-ON and is going to be a KILLER Hack! Might I make one suggestion? You may want to consider a 120GB or so SSD. Use this as your "boot" drive & where you install OSX, Ableton, Logic, etc. Then use your Seagate drive as your "working" drive that stores your Logic project files, VST libraries, etc.

You get MUCH better performance if you are not writing/rendering all your digital audio tracks on the same drive as your apps & your OS. Plus, as an added bonus, boot time from a SSD vs. a traditional HD are night & day! Prices of SSDs are dropping like quid on the bar for a pint :headbang:

i have :D

it was in the list, deffo want the ssd in there!! made me panic for a second haha

one question, as gordo suggested, do i need the firewire card? i literally have just 1 firewire device then rest is usb.

thanks gordo, i'll have a check of those mobo's, its the TI chipset that im needing becuase of the audio problems i've heard about and unfortunately i cant get one of those firewire cards over here, cant find one anywhere yet, but i'll keep looking. If the suggested boards have TI then i'll swap it over :)

thanks for your help dude!! much appreciated!!!

EDIT: Found the card on UK amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/1394B-1394A-PCI ... 402&sr=1-1

pretty expensive at £40 though

wonder if this will be ok

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Firewire-PCI-Ex ... 402&sr=1-8

its only £20

YIKES - so sorry about the oversight! Getting old is a real BI*CH! :)

And if you don't go with the UD5 motherboard that you originally spec'd out, then you definitely need to get a PCIe Firewire card that has the TI chipset. You'll have to do the math to see which would be less expensive (and if the hardware is even available):

--Z68X-UD5-B3 motherboard with the correct TI Firewire chipset already on-board, or
--Some other Gigabyte motherboard + a PCIe Firewire card that has TI chipset.

I'd check into Sonnet as another dependable & compatible brand of FW cards, too...
