I need help deciding on a motherboard and processor. I am hoping to make a high-end computer. I will be using the Mac side for working ( Photoshop, After Effects, etc. ), and my Windows side for gaming, hopefully at ultra-settings.

These are the combos I am deciding between:

option 1:

ASUS Rampage IV Gene LGA 2011 Intel X79

+
Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011

option 2:

ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA LGA 1150 Intel Z87

+
Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150

Questions:
What combo would best suit my needs?
Any compatibility issues?
Know problems with either combo?

I am going to be pairing them with 16GB of RAM, and an EVGA GeForce GTX 770 4GB card.

Please, if you have any input at all, don't hesitate to answer. I am hoping to put together this build soon, so any advice would be great! Thank you!

So that i7 can be overclocked like crazy, in fact it's kind of built with that in mind. The only place those extra two cores are really going to show themselves is going to be in After Effects. However, you don't have enough RAM to really make the most of them (if memory serves AE likes to give 3 GB per core).

The goal is to get 32GB of RAM eventually. I only plan on having 16GB (2x8) for a short while, as I already have it. So, if I got more RAM, would your opinion change? Thanks for the response :D

So the six-core processor won't do a thing for your gaming. In fact it'll probably be worse since it's a lower clock speed per core (most games don't benefit from multiple cores yet, though some are starting to).

However, Adobe software is optimized for multiple cores and will basically use up as much as you can give it, be it processor, RAM or GPU.

So the short version is all things being equal, if you care more about gaming go i7, otherwise get the 2011 processor. Though it might also be worth seeing what compatibility there is for Haswell-E processors as that'll give you the best of all worlds. But really new so they may not be supported yet.
