I will do if this is a simple error to fix by using 887 instead.

Not an error; device_id is 0887, marketing name is 888S. Answer "confirm 887 y/n:" y.

Thank you. I will be reinstalling the OS, as the guide to replace the codecs applied to Yosemite and I found the names of folders and files had changed with El Capitan, so I couldn't use Pacifist to get it back to the previous status (so the script would work), as I recall.

Any word on supporting Asus p8p67 pro? It says in the sticky unsupported on my BIOS 3xxx and my attempts to downgrade have been unsuccessful as well as concerns about breaking my windows 10/BIOS altogether.

I'm right in assuming I have no recourse here as far as getting onboard sound correct?

No AppleHDA.kext support. Try Voodoo, USB, etc.
