Hi everyone,
Aussie prospective Hackintosh user here, researching and prepping for a workstation build.
Primary purposes: Video editing with FCPX, sound production with Pro Tools.
Required connectivity: Thunderbolt 2, USB 3
I would like to be able to have two bootable system drives, one with Sierra installed and one with Mojave. This is because Pro Tools is not yet supported under Mojave (and I am stuck on Sierra with the version I have) but I will want Mojave otherwise (FCPX mainly and future Pro Tools upgradeability). Would be using a 4K monitor, camera for Skype, and have general OSX functionality of course. My video and audio projects all require thunderbolt 2 connected external hard drives.
My (incomplete) parts list:
Intel i7-8700 Processor
CRYORIG C7 40.5 CFM CPU Cooler
ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2-2280 SSD (probably 2 given I want 2 bootable system drives)
MSI Radeon RX 580 8 GB ARMOR OC Video Card
Update Now also looking at the R9 nano "FURY"
(Still need a power supply, enclosure, wifi…)
Whilst I am decided on the RX580 (or a Vega 64 if one magically turns up cheap), I am not sure if all RX 580’s are created equally, so advice there might help…
I am aware that the ASRock Z390 only takes maximum 32Gb RAM. Is there another motherboard similarly priced with same compatibility which is more expandable that anyone recommends?
So -
What am I missing, what have I neglected to check, is my plan for a bootable Mojave + bootable Sierra drive fraught with wishful thinking…. let me know what the holes in my plan are… and if any of the parts selected so far are known to be problematic.
Thanks,
Ben
