multiboot hp 4540 x 2, need help!

Here are the specs from the Ebay ad where I bought it new.

...

I now realize I don't think I need the atheros patch but installed on i5 and that works fine... :?:

Couple of things to try/provide:
- just for grins try booting with: IntelCapriFB=3 GraphicsEnabler=Y
(maybe Chameleon injects something we don't in DSDT, or maybe DSDT patch for ig-platform-id is missing)
- also try: IntelCapriFB=3 GraphicsEnabler=Y dart=0
(i3 should not have VT-d, but...)

Collect PCI inventory from Linux:
run 'lspci -nn' from Linux Terminal, copy output here
(we've had at least one 4540s where the Intel MEI device was not present...)

Mkay thanks=] Will do. Just reinstalled again without atheros patch and still the same. I hit the volume buttons after blindly logging in again, and the audio works as it did before the kext install. Just to keep you updated.

Here's the PCI stuff:

I tried both those arguments and it came out the same, would you like those screens before they turn black?
Again I was able to login in check volume and shut down.

MEI device is present, so it is not that... Can you boot safe mode? If so, capture ioreg: http://www.tonymacx86.com/audio/58368-guide-how-make-copy-ioreg.html

What BIOS version? Update if you don't have the latest, re-patch DSDT...

Could be EDID issue. I have a special DSDT patch that can inject EDID. See: https://github.com/RehabMan/Laptop-DSDT-Patch, use "Generic with EDID". Remove snb-platform-id, DualLink sections. Replace 128-byte EDID data with your own (that EDID is an example, and is from my 1080p AUOv4). Use MonInfo in Windows to extract.

Bios is Version F.31 dated 8/31/12.
How do I update bios? I downloaded latest one from hp site and it's an .exe file. F.43.
In bios when I hit update it says something about Placing the system bios and sig file on a fat32 partition or USB with update in Hewlett-Packard/BIOS/new. Never updated bios before...?

I cannot boot with safe mode with the installed chameleon nor chimera on the USB.
If i did another fresh install I could get to the desktop before kexts are installed. Would it be useful getting the IOReg then?

You should be able to update right from Windows. Follow HP's instructions.

No... the ioreg was so I could look at your DSDT/config and see what you ended up with from your selections from the ProBook Installer.

Doing a fresh install might allow you to not make the same mistake in the PBI, assuming that is what it is...

I think it going to be some sort of EDID problem... or BIOS...

So I updated bios from windows. Still the same with mac. Blind login then powerdown.
Tried Graphics Enabler=No -x and it actually froze at the screen below

I'm gonna reinstall ML one more time after creating a new USB installer. See if that helps. Then I will move on to EDID.

What version of ML are you installing?

10.8.5.
So the reinstall with new USB and bios update didn't work.
I would like to attempt the EDID inject but unfortunately my partner really needs a computer for her work and is growing impatient. She is content with ubuntu and is currently trying it out. As a consumer who actually has no specific need for mac, she migrated smoothly. I was also considering just returning the machine. I'm sure my chances would be higher with almost any other hp 4540. I ordered SSDs for upgrades so when those come I will try Install again. Much obliged.

Feel free to ask questions when you re-attempt.
