Mavericks/ Win 8 Separate Install

Very new to this, but can you partition an SSD and install Mavericks on one half, and leave the other half empty for a while and then install windows on that half? Or do you have to do them at the same time? Thanks for your help.

Best to put the OS's on separate SSDs, but yes, you can install OS X and come back later and format the other partition on the drive MSDOS FAT in disk utility and install Windows on it, using the Windows installer to re-format the partition NTFS before actually installing.
