I'm having problems getting my machine to boot to High Sierra. I was previously running El Capitan and did not have any issues. I followed the guide to do the direct update with APFS. The install went well up until the very end where I hung up at the Apple logo with the bar filled like 90%.

Since then I've done a ton of troubleshooting and tried out everything I could find on the forum. The furthest that I've made it has been to boot up and login in safe mode / single user mode, but then my machine would reboot itself ~10 seconds after logging in.

Now I've completely taken out my nvidia gpu as I plan to focus first on just booting up with the integrated intel graphics. Here is a pic of where the boot hangs in verbose mode. Also config.plist attached.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • The error in the verbose Boot screen indicates a problem with Graphics.
  • Please recheck your config.plist and type in the correct Intel HD graphics corresponding to your Intel i7 4790k Processor (Intel Hd 4600 not Intel HD 7000).
    • Edit and save the config.plist.
  • Make sure the appropriate BIOS options are selected to use IGFX before rebooting with the re-edited config.plist.

Thank you for your response!

I have selected IGFX as the display in BIOS.

I cannot figure out how to change my Intel graphics using Clover Configurator though. I see what you're saying though about it being set to Intel HD 7000 as I can see when I look at the xml. Is there a way to update this using Clover Configurator? Or is it as easy as changing the 7000 to 4600 in the xml text?

Thanks again!

Desktop HD4600 requirements:
- config.plist/Graphics/Inject/Intel=true
- config.plist/Graphics/ig-platform-id=0x0d220003
- config.plist/Devices/FakeID/IntelGFX=0x0
- BIOS DVMT-prealloc 64mb
- digital connection to your monitor (VGA not supported)
- VT-d disabled or use dart=0

Thanks a ton! These settings worked and got the machine to boot. However, now it's rebooting itself about 5-10 seconds after I log in.

Is there anyway to log what's causing the OS to crash at this stage? Also I've tried booting into safe mode and single user mode and I'm experiencing the same problem. Thanks!

  • You may check ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter for any clue to the problem .

  • But in my own personal experience, I would look for any problem with hardware in the system like RAM, HDD filesystem problem and PSU and overheating.

  • In most cases I have encountered this kind of early onset crashes, to isolate the problem is so hard and time consuming, to save time, I often resort to reinstall on a new blank disk and worry about reformatting the current hard disk at a later time.

In case this might help someone...

I just got my graphics (NVIDIA Geforce GTX 760) working in High Sierra (10.13.2) after having the gIOScreenLockState -error.

The issue was fixed by:
  • Disabling Integrated Graphics in BIOS
  • Removing nv_disable=1 (from clover boot options + clover configurator)
No extra kexts (or NVIDIA webdrivers) installed. Installation was done without the graphics card installed because i couldn't reach the installer otherwise.
