Non Apple recommended eGPU cards

Great guide! It inspired me to go and buy parts for a whole new hackintosh based on PRIME X299-DELUXE !
However I think I've managed to screw up my procurement of the graphics card, a ROG-STRIX-RXVEGA64.

I've just realised that it's not on the list of Apple recommended eGPU cards, and I think I'm in trouble for that!

I've tried for three days to make a bootable Mojave install usb but to no avail. The boot process ends with IOConsoleUsers: gIOScreenLockState 3 message. Just before that I also se a message: X86PlatformPlugin::configResourceCallback - DeepSleep is not supported! - and right after that IOPPF: XCPM mode and then DSMOS has arrived.

Do you think I should return the card and get an "approved" one ?

I've posted about it here with all required details / files.

It's not on Apple recommended list only because the eGPU enclosure they sell doesn't have a power supply powerful enough for this card, that is all.
Previously, the vega 64 was

The vega64 is natively supported by macos 10.13 and 10.14

Ah, I see! So you think my boot problems is not related to this particular GPU ? It will not help me if I buy the same card KGP has ?

Hey @kgp (and everyone),

I was wondering if there were any icon updates for Mojave for the Beauty theme, which is the one I think you use. Mine defaults to the generic green hard drive icon.

Thanks.

I have done that in the other thread, but it’s not as simple as you think.

You must use kexts but I had 2.4Ghz interference on Bluetooth devices so I instead removed the kexts and put back my old OSXWifi card combo in the pcie slot and it works better now.

Also you can’t use a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard without the PCIe card.

Certainly works just fine with my m.2 adapter and the mac broadcom card plugged in place of the original wifi: both the Apple BT trackpad and a keyboard even work in the BIOS.

I no longer have any interference either since I stopped using the OSXWIFI antennas and used the cables from the original wifi card to the outside header.
BT works brilliantly now, no more cut out with BT headset etc.

I'm fairly certain of it yes.

I had that video card at first, I only returned it because it didn't fit in my case, it's way too big taking 3 slots.

Getting your pc to boot with an os X installer is fairly trivial really, but you *must* follow the instructions @kgp has provided to the letter.
Your BIOS must be configured properly, starting with disabling CSM in the boot bios section and disabling MSR lock. Those are the two most important options that must be changed (all the others are optional)

Then you must use the EFI folder provided and adapt the TSCAdjustReset as described.

Edit: you won't get much help from @kgp as you haven't followed his guide to create the installer, you used unibeast

Thanks.

Not that I would know.. You are always free to choose a different theme anyway...

Hi,

I just wanted to give a hardware recommendation.
I found a much cheaper version for Wifi/Bluetooth:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FYGY54D/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

Half the price of the other card.
Took two weeks to arrive and worked out of the box.
Seems to have a very decent build quality too.

cheers,
Markus

P.S.: No, I didn't get this card for free or am affiliated. Just thought other guys might also think the $140 for the other card is a bit too much.

That card uses Bluetooth 4.0.
Another Amazon listed device upgrades the version to Bluetooth 4.2, and priced another 50% less:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0713RRZMB/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

Edit: it uses an Intel 8260 M.2 WiFi device, so there would be no macOS drivers for it, unfortunately.

An Amazon comment (dated December 2, 2015) also lists these additional:

Can i use this for a hackintosh build?
Answer:
For hackintosh Apple OS-X the following are known to work Vanilla out of the box.
No additional software or kexts to install.
1) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product//B00P0QAU36
2) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0713RRZMB/?tag=tonymacx86com-20/B00TQEX7AQ

4) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0713RRZMB/?tag=tonymacx86com-20/B00BXAXO7C

#4 is a USB 3.0 module that doesn't require a PCIe slot.

Yes, but does that card get recognized as Airport Xtreme right out of the box?
As for the other four. They are all broken links or out of stock.
