HD3000 and AMD Graphics, Working Together

OS X support of HD3000 integrated graphics and AMD discrete graphics separately; one or the other, is well known. For Sandy Bridge systems with HD3000 integrated graphics and AMD HD 5xxx or HD 6xxx discrete graphics, both graphics systems can be fully enabled at the same time in Lion. Easy to set-up; plugin the displays, set the bios and restart.

Requirements
1. Sandy Bridge motherboard (1155/H67/P67/Z68)
2. Intel HD3000 IGPU (i3-2105, i3-2125, i5-2405S, i5-2500K, i7-2600K, i7-2700K)
3. DSDT (tonymacx86.com DSDT Database)
4. Chimera 1.7 or newer
5. OS X 10.7.3 or newer

BIOS settings (Gigabyte H67N-USB3)
Advanced BIOS Features
  • 1. Init Display First: (User Preference)
    [list:15apzl3z]a. PCIE x16
    b. Onboard
2. Onboard VGA: Always Enable[/list:u:15apzl3z]

BIOS settings (Asus P8H67-I Deluxe)
Advanced
  • System Agent Configuration
    [list:15apzl3z]1. Initiate Graphics Adapter
    [list:15apzl3z]a. iGPU
[/list:u:15apzl3z][/list:u:15apzl3z]

Steps
1. Backup system
2. Note current BIOS settings
3. Plugin Displays (User Preference)
  • a. Main (HD3000)
    b. Slave (AMD)
4. Set BIOS
5. Restart

HDMI Audio (Requires Audio ID: 389/392, dsdt/kext edits - Lion HDMI Audio)
1. HD3000 HDMI audio
2. AMD HD 5xxx/6xxx HDMI audio
3. AMD HD 5xxx/6xxx DisplayPort audio

Test System
1. Gigabyte H67N-USB3 dsdt Download
  • a. Intel Core i7-2600K/HD3000
    b. Sapphire HD 6870 Vapor-X OC
2. Asus P8H67-i Deluxe dsdt Download
  • a. Intel Core i5-2405S
    b. XFX HD 6670

Notes
1. KPs: if your system KPs on boot, unplug HD3000 display, restore previous BIOS setting and restart
2. Artifacts: if your system has HD3000 artifacts, it is likely artifacts will continue
3. Freezes: if your system has HD3000 freezes, it is likely freezes may occur

Out of curiosity- what has to happen with the DSDT in order to enable both cards?

Nothing more than what's there. As noted, setting the BIOS correctly is essential. HDMI audio requires both the integrated and discrete graphics edits currently documented.

Hmm, so technically, with a MacMini SMBIOS and a 6870, you can run 6 monitors... interesting.
Toleda, is that correct? I'm curious to see if I can drive three monitors with my Z68X-UD3H which has DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA (which is not useable in OS X). I am currently using DVI and HDMI (via a DVI adapter). If I use an active DisplayPort to DVI adapter, will I be able able to use three monitors?

Like these?

No. HD3000 supports two displays only. Gordo's math is HD3000 @ 2 displays plus HD 6870 @ 4 displays equals 6 displays. The HD 4000 will support 3 displays.

Just confirming: I was thinking 2 via HD3000, 4 via 6870 (1 via DVi, 1 via HDMI, 2 via active Mini DP to whatever adapter).

Thank you guys. I glad we clarified Gordo's arithmetic. I've been thinking about getting a 6850 or 6870 now that the prices are dropping below $150.
