If you are installing High Sierra make the following selections in Multibeast and install.

Ran Multibeast and set exactly as above.

Test on booting from internal hs hdd:
it went on the infinite loop, unable to boot into High Sierra.

Sorry to hear that. Not sure why this has been so difficult. The install for me was completely without any of these kinds of problems. You have made much progress though, don't give up yet.

Try booting verbose and see where it kernel panics. If it reboots too fast check the option at the clover boot menu to prevent it from restarting after a KP. Alternately you can take a video of the verbose text and then play that and pause it where the reboot happens. Post a picture over that here and/or the last few lines of text.

trs96,

thank you for your continued support.

all these 'extra issues' are there for a reason: making me learn the steps in more details..

I just had good luck, boot from USB stick, saw the clover details without the Nvidia ......

so I rerun Multibeast, this time I inject Nvidia, rebuild and install..

felt great... reboot, it works, now it also resolve the sleep problem..

next thing is to get sound working..

Use VoodooHDA 2.9.0 and the disabler kext. Works flawlessly and quickly. I've heard others report sleep problems with High Sierra and this hardware. If you figure it out, post your approach to resolving that. I no longer own the 8200 so I'm not able to try and fix that.

Hi Everyone,

I have heard a lot of good things about hacking a 8200/8300, so I'm taking a leap (I have hacked an HP Probook before), but just wanted to check on compatible parts before I go ahead and get them.

So there's quite a few refurbished and used 8200/8300 going around in my country for about $150. I have my eyes on a 8200 Normal size tower, but if don't come lucky with that then will get a SFF version

So here's my few questions on extra components for the build

I see you mention no 3rd party RAM modules. Does it not recognise other brands other than Samsung HP and Hynix? Cos I want to upgrade to 32Gb on the unit. But can only find 2GB and 4GB modules in those brands, not 8gb modules

I've seen some images of 8200/8300's with USB3 slots, some with not. Does it only come standard with USB2, and then you need to replace the card with USB3's. And is the Inateck PCI to USB3 card the only one that's compatible? or are there others?

And for an i7 CPU, does it only recognise the i7 2600, or does it recognise other i7 CPU's as well?

Thanks in advance. Just wanna make sure I get all the correct parts before attempting the build. Parts aren't so easy to get where I stay so I source them online and hope they the right ones.

If you need 32GB of ram then go with the HP 8300 instead of the 8200. You can use ram from other companies in the MT 8300. Even the brands like G.Skill Ripjaws that has tall heat spreaders. Brands like Corsair or G.Skill don't seem to work well in the 8200 as HP had more restrictions on which ram was supported. Here is the best 32GB ram kit to use in the HP 6300 Pro MT or in the HP 8300 Elite MT. The DVD drive restricts their use in the SFF model, clearance issues for the heatsinks.

You could also buy two 16GB kits and save a few dollars. The ram will only run in dual channel mode not quad channel anyway.

Also, the i7-3770 is the best choice if you want an i7. It gives you compatible HD4000 graphics which are nice to have for various reasons. The 8300 also gives you 4 onboard USB 3.0 ports. The 8200 only has USB 2.0 onboard. The HP 8300 i7-3770 version will cost more but you will get a much longer useful life out of it than the HP 8200 with the i7-2600 CPU.

Read all about this in the Sierra version of the 8300 guide.

Thanks for the reply @trs96 I'll be getting the Elite 8200 or 8300 from an online auction site here in South Africa. Seems to have the best prices. They mostly refurbished machines with their original parts. Then the RAM and Video Card I will probably order from amazon US as it delivers here. New Egg isn't as easy to get here as amazon orders. The i7 3770 CPU I found someone selling here in South Africa for very cheap. So might grab that as well.

So with the 8300 SFF, you still need a low profile graphics card hey?

I can't find Desktop size 8300's here, only SFF. But some 8200 Desktop size.

So if I get the SFF model, will low profile RAM be ok? Cos I found some Kingston 8GB low profile RAM modules.

These are the low profile modules I found. Would they work in a SFF module:

Yes, you can only use LP graphics cards in the SFF cases.

One other possibility you have may not considered.
1. Buy a barebones HP 8200 CMT (no cpu ram or HDD)
2. Buy the HP 8300 CMT motherboard and the i7-3770 separately.
3. Install those in your 8200 case and add your ram kit and you've got a full size 8300.

The 8200 CMT and 8300 CMT cases are the same. They didn't change them year to year from 2011 to 2012.
They only put the newer Ivy Br. motherboards in the same CMT case in 2012.

Here's some pics to show you they are the same I/O on the back panel.

You don't have to use LP ram just normal height without tall heatsinks on it.
I've never tested Kingston ram in one of these. It may work if the ram timings are the same. You'd have to try it and see.
If you go with the 8300 model don't buy slower 1333 MHz ram get the 1600 MHz instead.
