I would like to get a 4k monitor. I am considering Dell P2715Q once it will be available in EU. But I also need to replace the GPU, since my existing HD 6850 won't support 3840x2160 resolution. At the moment I am still on 10.9 but I will be upgrading Yosemite once I get the new monitor.

The safest bet would seem to be GTX 750 (TI) with Display Port. It is also been confirmed, that it will support UHD@60Hz over SST.

But are there any other GPUs that might work? I am basically looking for cheaper alternatives and I don't mind getting second hand grapics card. For example what about R7 250X/7770? Would it be able to drive 4k monitor at 60Hz over DP 1.2 SST?

I have the Gigabyte GTX 750 (Model GV-N750OC-2GL). It has 2 x HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort, and I can confirm that it can drive 3840x2160 @ 60Hz over DisplayPort.

Thanks! I somehow missed that model when looking at different GTX 750 (TI) options. This is also a little cheaper than the TI models.

But I just noticed following comments about 5k iMacs on Netkas blog:
M290X is radeon HD 7870 but at lower 900 mhz core clock.
So does this mean Yosemite should have good support for 7850/7870 and the rebranded R7 265/R9 270 cards?

I guess I will be getting the GTX 750(TI), but just out of curiosity, has anybody had success with 4k and AMD cards?

I replaced HD 6850 with GTX 660 and it just worked out of the box with GraphicsEnabler disabled.
Now I got the P2715Q and it was just plug & play. 3840x2160@60Hz worked automatically. HiDPI 1080p and 1440p scaling work nicely.
At the moment it looks like there is also no need to update my 10.9.3 system to Yosemite.
