Hello ! I have the same build, but I've got a weird crash from time to time.

Here's the log :

I don't know what's causing this… Anyone has any idea ?

mm2margaret, I would be interested in possible solutions to NVMe drive heat dissipation. TIA.

Sorry Stork, for the lateness (and the length) of this response. But at least now here it is.....

I have two Samsung NVMe drives and they run hot. Overheating drives can throttle performance and cause the drive to wear out sooner than they should. So, for me, the first step is knowing their temperatures.

FINDING TEMPERATURES - IS YOUR DRIVE OVERHEATING?
I found two utilities that are useful in getting temps from my drives.

One is DriveDx and it costs $19.95 with a 15 day trial. It's a nice utility, with really good report results. It can be found at: https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx
It's a great utility and has a nice, polished interface, but it costs $$$. I did attach a screenshot of it's output. I really like it, and I still might buy it....maybe....

The other utility I found is free: Smartmontools, which can be found at: https://www.smartmontools.org/. With this utility, you install a package file, and at first, you see nothing, because it's strictly cli.
A Basic command to get output would be: /usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/disk0, which will get you pages of data.

But a more specific command (and more useful, I think) would be: "/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/disk0 | grep Temp*" (without the quotes, of course) which would get you this output:

Temperature: 50 Celsius

which is exactly what I want out of the tool. You can play around with the cli to get whatever you like, and lots of data or shorter amounts of data, but now that you know your temps, the next question has to be, how do you control them?

NVME HEATSINKS:
Both Amazon and Newegg have NVMe heatsinks. I bought this one at Newegg because it has a thermal pad for the top of your NVMe and the bottom: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4RE6WA0344.

There's also this one, which also has a top and bottom sandwich style to it: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAC8W64C2822.

The idea is that you have a thermal pad on top, then a heatsink on top of that, and then a thermal on the bottom of your NVMe drive, secured either by a clip of some sort, or heat resistant rubber bands. That way, your drive is sandwiched with thermal padding, and that, I believe is the most effective way to reduce the temps on your NVMe drive.

But first you need to know if you need it, and so that's why I started using those temperature utilities. As it turns out, on my 960 Pro, I did need it. I hit 73 degrees at one point (on my second sensor), and that was a warning that my drive was overheating. Once I applied my thermal sandwich, I don't go over 49 degrees, and my performance is better than when I first bought the drive.

There are lots of NVMe heatsinks you can buy, I'm not into pushing one over the other. Find one that works you and use it. But to see if it is working, you need to monitor the temps of your NVMe drive and that means you must use a utility to do so. That's why I started this with how to get the temps in the first place.

By the way, someone said in an earlier post that iStat could show Samsung temps. I contacted Bjango about this, and they said they could not monitor temps on a Samsung NVMe drive.

Hope this is helpful.
