Lo all,

I'm working on a series at The Mac Observer on building a Hackintosh. The second article, on graphics cards, is now live. I'd love your feedback and comments!

Cheers,

Jeff

It all depends on your applications requirements. If you dual boot macOS and Windoze (for gaming) then you might consider the 1080/1080 Ti/Titian. If you are a prosumer and want to do video work, then at least a 1070. Budget wise, 1050/1050 Ti/1060 for general purpose computing, driving multiple monitors for programming and occasional gaming.

Again, it all depends. On my Skylake systems, I use a GTX 950 and GTX 980 to drive multiple monitors, but I don't game.

YMMV. I recommend you look at what people are using their builds for in the User and Golden Builds forum sections.

Also the Sierra Desktop Guides forum section.

Good luck!

Thanks, Stork! I did that, as well as pulling from the Buyer's Guide here. I offered a wide range of choices (or as wide as I could, listing just 5 graphics cards). Prices ranged from around $1200 down to just over $100. The 1050, 1080, 1060, and Titan are there. And the 1050.

What are you going to use your system for? General purpose computing? Gaming? What would be your driving applications for a graphics card?

Is this potential graphics card purpose for your HP Z2? If so, size might be a consideration.

Ahh, you misunderstand :) The article is already written, and it's aimed at a target audience that might have broad interests in how they use their Hackintosh but be more geared towards professional or prosumer use. I focused on the more powerful cards, because the type of folks who would otherwise buy a Mac Pro will need a graphics powerhouse.

I'm actually working on speccing out my own Hackintosh, apart from the Z2. Probably a tower-based system, possibly with the Nvidia Titan XP.

Ah, OK. Well, I didn't connect you as the author of the article. And what's missing from the article is what the range of performance the cards can do for potential buyer. So, as it stands, IMO, it provides no useful information other than the range of Pascal cards currently available. I recommend you research and put recommended uses for each card. Tom's Hardware and Anandtech are a good place to start as their reviews provide pluses and minus for each use. (Don't forget to provide your references.)

Okay, thanks! I'll definitely keep that in mind. I guess I was going for more of a high-level overview of available cards that will work, but I think you're right...I should focus a bit on performance and recommended uses.
