This thread has been an immense help to me, and I'm very grateful! I just got a SSD so I thought I'd do a clean install of ML and all has gone well so far. All USB ports seem to work fine. My only problem is the orange hard drive icon, not sure what that's all about. Hopefully nothing else gets...
My XFX 9800 GTX+ Black edition worked oob and it was about $50 on ebay. This was the top of the line nvidia card 3 years ago so it's pretty cheap now. It's great for casual gaming or whatever else I use. I haven't tried multiple monitors though. My mobo didn't have a vga/dvi out so I got this...
Yeah, it's in the bios. Check the MIT and go to advanced memory settings and enable XMP. I think mine was Profile1. Just making sure, this is the i3 2130 we're talking about, right?
Well one thing to check is whether your memory is in dual channel mode and if it's running at its highest frequency. With my system, all I had to do was enable XMP, your ram may or may not support this but your mobo does for sure.
I've had success with the ASUS 8400 GS and the XFX 9800 GTX+ Black edition. The 9800 GTX+ is what I would recommend because the card works oob with only GraphicsEnabler. It also gives me decent performance in games. I got it on ebay for $60 so it wasn't expensive either. For a bare minimum you...
My build was around $1000 and achieves similar geekbench scores as the low end 8 core Mac Pro. I got just under 12k at stock frequencies. It's also stable, it's only had problems twice in the 2 months of daily use. With a decent mobo and cooler, you can overclock the 2600k pretty easily. I...
+3 for the Hyper 212+
My 2600k stays around 28 at idle and gets up to 53 under full load at stock frequencies. I'm using Arctic cooling MX4 thermal paste. It all cost about $35 bucks too, much cheaper than water cooling systems. I haven't really overclocked yet, sorry to say. It fits in my Antec...
Re: Nvidia GeForce 8400GS 512MB no QE/CI on 10.6.8

Try this. It worked for me in Lion, don't know about snow leopard though.

I too had my resolution stuck at 1024 x 768, and modding that kext let me switch between resolutions my monitor supported.
Also, you might want to make sure that you have QE/CI enabled.

I too have the 10de 10c3 8400 GS that didn't work oob but after modding 1 kext and using graphics enabler it worked but was slow. I was going to try modding the graphics power management kext but I was too lazy and ended up buying a...
I would enjoy seeing a guide on how you got your setup working. Chances are you'll end up helping a lot of people with similar systems to yours. Although the mods want us to use things like xmove and rboot and whatnot, I just found them to be unnecessary.
My 9800 GTX+ worked oob with graphics enabler. I don't game much either, which is why I bought a graphics card that was the best in its day. It was about $60 on ebay. You can get 'em pretty cheap from gamers who upgrade their graphics cards. It gets about 19 fps in cinebench.
I use the hyper 212 plus and it tops out about 55 under full load on stock clock speeds. I haven't tried overclocking yet because I haven't had the need for it yet.
I believe he was asking about the 6970, not the 6870...
This build guide is what I based mine on, it gets similar scores as the Mac Pro.

The only difference is that with one i7 you have 1 memory controller vs 2 Xeons you get 2 memory controllers, so it won't be as fast, but it's still pretty quick. My build has been...
The higher number UDs are better at overclocking, which is why I got a UD5 for my i7 2600k. All I know is that the UD uses 2x the copper in the PCB. I believe the UD7 also has 2 PCIe 16x slots if you're using 2 graphics cards. The Z68X-UD5-B3 was very easy to set up and it was a good balance of...
