Z690 Chipset Motherboards and Alder Lake CPU

LOL, I was just waiting for someone to post this! :)

To create a Golden Build, we first need to settle on a specific motherboard. Which board shall we use?
  • Gigabyte Z690 Aero D?
  • Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Master?
  • MSI Z690 MEG ACE?
  • Asus Z690 ProArt Creator WiFi?
  • Asus Z690 Maximus Hero?
P.S. This does not constitute a promise to create a Golden Build. I'll think about it... ;)
@CaseySJ, understood... however, which has on board Thunderbolt capabilities? That will be my nomination.

All of those have on-board Thunderbolt 4 except for the Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Master.

@CaseySJ Do you think DDR5 is a good choice? Those boards you mentioned use DDR5 only and these cost a lot more.

Alas there are no DDR4-based Z690 motherboards with on-board Thunderbolt. In fact, most (or all) DDR4-based Z690 boards don't even split PCIe 5.0 lanes between two x16 slots. Instead, PCIe 5.0 is only available on the first x16 slot.

Once DDR5 becomes more readily available, users will start to question why we used a DDR4 board. So I think a DDR5 board might be best because:
  • It has on-board Thunderbolt
  • It can split PCIe 5.0 lanes between two x16 slots
  • It has WiFi 6E whereas most DDR4 Z690 boards come with WiFi 6
  • It has better long-term appeal
